Sorry, guys but Christmas is my season. It means ski season starts! As for the music I like it in all formats. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Grover Washington Jr., Joan Baez, and a boat load of others have recorded Christmas music. I get a kick out of hearing little voices sing those songs. So, Old Man Potter for most of us it is a wonderful life...let the music play. And come, December 26 shut it down til next Thanksgiving.

We recorded a short Christmas tune for Whorehay's show last year. It was a done quick and dirty like. I recall we consumed 12 minutes from learning the song to stopping the little recorder. But it was all for fun. It had the sound of breaking glass and I even got to use the word "motherf***er" in it which I don't think has ever been done before in a holiday classic to my knowledge. The whole thing was kinda in bad taste. A real gem.
I can't imagine we'd ever do another one, even though I like Christmas music.

Yes, I get what you're saying &: Well, Christmas "surf" or "on the electric guitar" is GREAT ! I had only "played out" for a year when in 1965, "The Ventures Christmas Album" came out.....what a God Send. We learned at least 1/2 of that, then "arranged" some other Christmas songs puttin' our spin on em'....& we must have had at least 10 paying gigs in December because we did that...(& helped us line up some jobs for 1966). This was on Long Island & we kept playing "surf music" (mixed in w/other popular stuff) well into 1968.....without any complaints from anyone. Chet Atkins LP was great & a Booker T. & M.G.'s came out....I can NOT hate "Christmas Surf"......only love & embrace it...it's GREAT !

I generally dislike any Christmas songs other than the traditional carols / hymns.
So put me in the Xmas Surf sucks camp.

I like a lot of the Christmas surf instrumentals, but not all of them. The same goes for the non-Christmas surf instrumentals.

What most people are really complaining about is about the amount of christmas music they are exposed to.They are sick of it due to overexposure, not the actual music itself.
As I'm getting old I can remember the time before the satuation of music in our lives.
No internet, portable transistor radios had only just been invented, vinyl was the only portable music format.
Most music was performed live, if you weren't there you didn't hear it.
Compare that to today, music is everywhere, in every building, at sporting events, in public transport, tv, on phones etc etc. It seems people can't cope with the sounds of everyday life.
Personally I start celebrating Christmas from the 11th December, 2 weeks is enough. I enjoy it much more this way, sing the christams songs , do the shopping , put up the tree and all that. I don't attend any christmas functions that are held before then.
Like a lot of traditional things in modern life, it has been overexposured, so try to reduce your exposure :).

Actually... I have recorded some of the Christmas shows put on by Clint, Guy, etc. and play them while putting up decorations, hosting company, etc. By nature of their shows they've cherry picked some of the better tunes done-up surf style and I really enjoy listening to them. And so do my friends and family who often remark it's the first time they've heard those renditions, obviously freah & new to their ears which adds to their enjoyment.
On the flip side, there is alot of christmas music either overplayed or poorly interpreted, regardless of the genre, that turns me (and the station) off.

Actually, I would argue that Christmas surf is inherently more lame than regular surf. ElMostro was right in the first post, that with few exceptions a Christmas approach really lacks what makes surf cool to begin with. My tastes mostly lie on the darker and more driving side of surf music, but even with the fun surf I love there's a certain excitement and energy to the approach that I think is totally lost in a contented, jolly tune. Whether fun or serious, the best surf is always dramatic somehow, which is hard to capture in a plodding, major-key holiday tune with sleigh bells slathered all over it. Yuck.

Well said!
Surf music has way too much nostalgia in it, it makes songs trite and insincere, Christmas music is just an extension of this. As Ben said, I prefer my surf music to come from a darker place and I prefer it to be original. Not a stolen aesthetic.

Oh Santa you know what I want for Christmas
Hey Santa you know what I want this year
Oh will you please be nice to me
and bring a surf board 9 foot 3
Oh Christmas is near
it only comes once a year.

I do understand what many of you are saying - there definitely is some bad Christmas surf music out there (I get just about all of it for review in the Continental magazine, but I also hear it through Pandora and various podcasts and radio shows). Since we've put out 3 volumes of our "Seasonal Favorites" CD's, I guess I'm guilty of unleashing even more Christmas surf to the masses. While I like all of the discs and all of the songs on 'em, I know it's impossible for everyone to like every single song on 'em.
What we have tried to do is include more traditional songs from other countries. To me these are the most interesting songs on the comps. Here are just a few examples worth checking out:
Leise Rieselt Der Schnee - The Incredible Mr. Smith
Morgen Kinder Wirds Was Geben – The Razorblades
Så Går Vi Rundt Om En Enebærbusk – The Mobsmen
Staffan Var En Stalledrang – The Surfites
Rocknuts - The Lunatics
Alle Jahre Wieder – The Incredible Mr. Smith
The three discs have been among the most popular releases we've put out. Having said that, it felt kinda ridiculous putting out volume 3 in a series of Christmas surf CD's, and it feels even more ridiculous thinking about a volume 4. I know I'll definitely want to do another holiday release though. I just need to find the right angle for it. Maybe a single artist release (CD or EP), or perhaps a single theme. Let me know if you have any ideas!

Sean, please do a fourth volume, you've done a great job picking good instrumental surf tunes and everyone I know has enjoyed your discs immensely.

I don't mind a little Christmas music. Or a lot of surf music, or some mixing of the two. But not indiscriminately. The problem? In both cases the genre is a collection of rather different things united more by non-musical history than by being a coherent musical whole. Some of the subgenres are less appealing to me (pseudo-norteno polka surf piece anyone?). And even if things were coherent - grateful they aren't - some of pieces in any genre bear repetition less well, and some are just not very good even the first time you hear them. In fact, some of are pretty horrible. Unfortunately, quality control in Christmas music is not very good - Frosty the *** Snowman, really? - and Christmas music programmers seem to fixate on the sludge. Maybe because they have 4 weeks to fill with a smallish collection of material. On the other hand, when I think of all the good Christmas music I never hear in Walmart I'm actually kind of grateful.
For what it's worth, although on the whole I like the sound of "horror" surf, I actually find the adult fixation on Halloween these days to be incredibly annoying, and there is certainly a certain amount of dreck in this musical genre too. Lyrics especially, if there are any, tend to be rather brain dead, and I mean that in the bad way!
Worst Hanukkah surf song ever: any attempt at the Dreidel song. Actually any non-surf attempt at it, too, keinahora.
