Okay, it's splitting hairs time again here at SG101, so I thought I would ad this little morsel you might dig. I'm sure some of you know but Eleki isn't exactly the same as GS. Notice that the title of this comp is "GS, I Love you". GS refers to "Group Sounds" or music inspired mostly by The Beatles and British Invasion. Whereas Eleki means Electric Guitar music like The Ventures.

Making a distinction between eleki and GS is definitely not "splitting hairs".

That was an attempt at sarcasm, Klas. This is splitting hairs central! If I didn't think there was a difference I wouldn't have pointed it out in the first place. Very Happy

anybody know who these chaps are? After hearing this im dying to hear some of their other music. They sort of remind me of the 5.6.7.8s. I think they were the same girl group in ELEKI NO WAKADAISHO

Big Beat (Ace Records) have just released a Takeshi Terauchi collection spanning the years 1966-74. 23 tracks for the CD and a less tracks limited edition vinyl LP.

CD: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005LOIC5A/

LP: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005LOIAMA/

Although I won't be getting it myself as I already have most of the 60's tracks and am not that interested in his 70's output, this could be a really good and readily available start for someone new to his stuff.

Some more info on it from Ace Records' website along with 3 sample tracks. The text says that Terry was given his Mosrite by the Ventures. Never heard that but it's well known that was indeed the case with Yuzo Kayama and his Mosrite. Also I had no idea Terry was considered a heavy drinker!

Thanks for the tip Klas. Looks like a very interesting collection. Those guys at Ace release really good compilations and retrospectives.

"It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea

Yeah, that definitely looks like a pretty good intro for people who aren't too familiar with Terry's stuff. If it's successful hopefully more of his stuff (and Yuzo Kayama/The Sharp Five/etc.) will be reissued outside of Japan.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

I wonder why they chose to start off the collection as late as with the year 1966 which rules out all his early surf recordings. Also, I'm missing some great 1966 must haves like "Test Driver" from the tracklist. Should still be a really good collection coming from Ace and I bet there are some extensive liner notes and cool pics for the booklet.

What I really would like to see in the future are comps of more obscure eleki bands that only had a single or two. That would be great.

That would be great; I (and probably most Westerners) only know about a few, when there were supposed to be hundreds, if not thousands that formed after The Ventures' invasion. I might still check out this Ace comp if they replenish their stock (already sold out).

Yeah, I can only think of like 15 eleki bands although I strongly suspect that a vast majority of the bands that started up after the first Ventures tours, never made it to the recording studios. When the GS boom took off a couple of years later, there were a lot more bands that actually got to put something on record. Still must be some cool never re-issued eleki recordings in the vaults or among collectors, and hopefully enough for a comp or two if someone would be inclined to put it out.

I think Ace now have a warehouse in the US so it should most likely be back in stock very soon. There are also several available from Amazon market sellers to a better price (new copies currently starts at $13.52).

High time to post some Terry videos to this thread again. Check out this clip of probably his most famous song "Tsugaru Jongara Bushi" which used to be on YouTube but then disappeared for a few years. I would date this to the mid 70's and think it's a really inspired performance from the man. Also notice how he change to a different tuning in the middle of the song and then a little later bring the guitar to normal pitch again. As I recall it was Ivan that pointed this out since I initially thought that Terry had to re-tune the guitar twice during the song because of his frenetic playing, haha.

Terry appears to be still going strong these days although one can tell he has some difficulties playing the guitar in this clip that was shot just a few months ago. "Tsugaru Jongara Bushi" again (followed by "Terry's Theme").

Here's one of my faves... Terry Terauchi and the Bunnies' "Moanin". The drumming is just so damn heavy and the guitar tone is downright evil. I like the eerie sounding organ too. We (The Ghastly Ones) played this in our Eleki tribute at Deke's Guitar Geek fest with Dave Pilgrim. It was such a blast to play.

I just received that Ace comp as a Christmas gift. The liner notes are amazing, what a story. One thing I learned was that Eleki was considered contributing to juvenile delinquency and was banned by the board of education, Unbelievable! - it's instrumental music Shocked

Heh, Rumble was banned for the same reason, if I remember correctly. I really need to plumb this thread and start working on getting into more Eleki stuff. I've gotten clued into some really awesome stuff lately and I know there's a lot more.

I just got the ACE/Big Beat Takeshi Terauchi Nippon Guitars comp too.

The last track on the CD won't play on any player/system I have, and the second to last is hit or miss. Based on a close inspection of the foil, I think they may have just physically run out of disc space on the pressing Confused

Anyone else having issues with the last track or two not playing?

Update: If I skip straight to the last 2 tracks, no dice, but just letting the entire album play, I'm having luck. Guess the final cuts just need a lot of runway to warm up ; )

The variety of material here is pretty broad. The liner notes talk about Danny's point (frowned upon socially), so Terauchi-san asked the Board of Education what kind of music they would approve. Western Classical and Japanese Traditional music. There is a good bit of this CD that clearly came from that work. My wife (half Japanese, spent half of the first 12-13 years of her life between the US and Japan) instantly recognized the traditional flair. Kinda tripped out on the "Eleki"-fide approach.

As the cover denotes, this collection dates into the early 70's. No mistaking those tracks in this collection either.

Looking forward to more spins to get even better acquainted with it.

Danny, did you get that from Alec? Tell him I want one too. Haha!

Sick! Thanks for posting that video. After hearing you guys play that one when you came up to Sacramento, I've been wanting to hear the original. Its a great song. I have a DVD of that show. You guys also played another Eleki tune that's also really good, no idea what it is though.
