Matt,
I know you're not the only veteran here. Thank you, and my heartfelt thanks to all the veterans out there.

USMC 78-84. 20 minutes spent trying to get a pic up! Screw it, I'm gonna have a beer and salute all veterans.

I was in the Navy but that was during peacetime and while I was never in danger I still had the full benefits of the GI Bill. All thanks should go to those who really had to put it on the line. While this may not be the forum for this, I’d like to give thanks to my dad’s brother “Bill” who was killed during the invasion of North Africa (my dad was drafted into the Army in 1940 and stayed throughout the war but he lead an Army (big band type) dance band).
Bill had the misfortune of being mortally wounded on what was essentially the first day of the American war in the European theater (North Africa – Italy, France etc.). He was on a destroyer off Morocco when a French Moroccan shell connected on what could only be called a “Hail Mary pass” as it swished through the rear funnel exploding in the engine room. Three were killed instantly and 27 wounded – he died on a hospital ship the next day.
I looked up his ship a couple of years ago and found there was an online video made by a diving company that discovered the bow off New Jersey around 2002 and chronicled its history (the ship was cut in two the year after my Uncle was killed but the stern remained afloat and repaired in time for D-Day). Had I only thought to do this a year earlier my dad could have seen it. Fortunately, my mom was still around and she and I attended one of their reunions in Tampa, Florida (they were all very nice but none of the 17 or so there remembered him).
The attached link is to the 25 minute video of the ship that starts with a news broadcast and continues with a history. The history includes some of the most major events of the time and Bill missed everyone. Anyone interested in military history or diving would appreciate this.

On my computer it appears fairly small but if you right click and go to zoom it presents in full screen mode.

21 year retiree here, as a Unit Supply Specialist, and working as a Supply Clerk or Unit Armorer. 2 years Army (1987 - 1989), 19 years Army National Guard (1989 - 1998 & 2000 - 2010). Although I never made it out of the U.S. in 21 years, I always go by the old saying "All gave some, but some gave all." It's the latter ones, in that saying, that I truly salute!

I'm a couple of days late on this one. Thanks to all Vets out there. I have breakfast every Tuesday AM with about a dozen Marines. Some are WWII, most are Korea vets and some Vietnam like me. We went back on Thursday for the Marine Corps Birthday and cake cutting. Friday was Veterans Day and we were back again. Sat.was at the American Legion for the First Marine Division, Orange County Chapter Marine Corps Ball and cake cutting. Prime Rib dinner...yummy.
I was in the United States Marine Corps 1969-1972...Vietnam '70-'71.
Jeff was born while I was still in...1971.

Thanks Dad, and to all the other Veterans out there.
We watched a detailed 6 part history of the Vietnam war last week,
on the Military Channel. Very eye opening, and shocking stuff, that I never knew about Vietnam.

A heartfelt thank you as well. It really isn't fair that you all are called upon and a thank you really doesn't cut it.
