Have they ever come out West, or have they mostly done shows in the Boston/East Coast area?

And why do Mass surf bands kick so much ass?

I want to hear Caravan with a drum solo.

I'd love to have them come out here and play.
But I have to say, I'd prefer the 90s line up.

The Fathoms are Fantastic! Yes

I wasn't really feelin' that third album. It was good, but the previous albums had a different dynamic. It was like Pepsi Free. I want Coke Classic.

yeah, to me, the 3rd cd felt like a 3rd rate Shadows/LSJ's cover band.

What was the name of Frankie's other project?

That's kind of harsh Jeff! While it definitely had more of a Shadows feel than the heavily reverbed, surfy first two albums, there was nothing 3rd rate about it! It sill had some great guitar playing and songwriting.

I think he had a few. One of them was the Cranktones.

I strongly disagree. There are some fantastic songs on this record.

I agree with Ferenc. It's not dripping with reverb like the first two, which is why I believe some folks didn't like it as much, but it has some great instrumental arrangements! Jeff, I certainly wouldn't call it 3rd rate. Listen to it again.

3rd cd = pipe & slippers - i'm too young to listen to it!

Ok, I busted out the CD, listening to it now. I need a quick review. As I recall, not trad surf, but there are some fantastic arrangements. Some do sound like they're in the vein of the Shadows and/or Los Straitjackets. Track 4 has a very spaghetti feel to it.

A few years back, somewhere on this site, Ivan and I did separate reviews of Fathom This.

Sorry about the goofy characters; something got messed up in the conversion from SG101 0.1 to SG101 1.0.

Thanks Brian. Wink

Ivan's review is far more thorough than mine!

Fathomless is one of the best surf albums of the 90's!
Anyone know if it's available in vinyl?

Sorry,
I should have said (1st rate) Shadows or LSJ's inspired band.
Not 3rd rate cover band. my bad.

Fathomless on vinyl: I think not, based mainly on

http://www.instromania.net/D2/ART/ART_F/FATHOMS%20The.php

Not even easy to find as a CD these days. In fact, not even available currently as a download, I think. (OK, I only looked on Amazon and iTunes.)

http://www.amazon.com/Fathomless-Fathoms/dp/B000006JLZ/ref=ntt_mus_ep_dpi_2

Used good $35 on up to Used like new $200. All CDs as far as I can tell. I finally got one of the $35 or so versions a while back. Still happy with getting it period.

I agree that Fathom This (the CD) is not quite what you expect stumbling in after Fathomless and Overboard, but the title song itself is certainly in that spirit. I agree with those who say Fathom This is just different not worse. Yeah, sort of Shadowsy, but a lot of it would also fit nicely on other bands' more recent surf albums. Maybe not on recollections of Fathomless filtered through a 15 years. On the other hand, would Cruisin' The Zone or Rockabilly Surfer seem to fit in the earlier work if we were looking at them on Fathom This? Blandino has always been pretty eclectic.

You know, if some variant of Blandino & Co. still play now and then it would be worth going to Massachusetts to hear them and some other bands from the area if they could all play about the same time (but not at exactly the same time).

Stumbled across this 1997 Double Crown interview with Frankie and Dave - interesting to see that he mentions a new as-yet-unnamed country/roots band with Jerry Miller and Allan Scheinfeld - this is The Spurs, who are kinda still around, though not really playing much:

http://www.dblcrown.com/fathoms.html

Incidentally, Jerry Miller and Johnny Sciasa are in the Eilen Jewell band now - she tours internationally and is pretty much the reason for the demise of The Cranktones (Johnny), The Spurs (Johnny and Jerry) and one of the later versions of the Fathoms that had Jerry on guitar.

I also didn't know their first show was opening for LSJ.
