Unofficial tag line for this episode: "This show will leave you stroked, not bored"

Damn, where is that Rat Fink Emoticon when you need it.

Can't wait to hear this one.

Whorehay when are you going to put this stuff on iTunes so I can just download automatically?

Great show, Norm! You played a lot of my faves. When is the all Steve Douglas show?;)

Yeah, great playlist including some long time favorites of mine like "Chicky Run" and "Burning Rubber"! And I need to finally get my grubby little hands on that Vettes album. I've lost several auctions for it over the years as it usually goes for quite hefty money due to the Bruce Johnston connection. Oh, and looking at the photo, I was a little disappointed that you didn't spin anything from The Woofers' Dragsville album which has some really great hot rod vocals.

(A couple of things I noticed off the playlist, "Flash Falcon" should be by Shutdown Douglas and the great "Old Ladies Seldom Powershift" was originally released as "Bucket Seats" by the Rally-Packs although it was later retitled and included on a J&D album).

Glad everyone is diggin' the show! I had a total blast putting it together. Ted, indeed an entire show could be devoted to Steve Douglas! Klas, thanks for the info on the alternate titles. You're right, Flash Falcon is Shutdown Douglas. As you know many of these hot rod tunes get re-titled or re-released with a different band names so I went with the title of the version I have, as in the J&D track. For example Road Runnah by The Pyramids was also released as Road Runnah by The Road Runners, etc. Also, I was going to play Ridin' the Rails by The Woofers by it didn't make it. My first cut of the show was 150 songs! I had to narrow it to 30. It was tough. Fink On!

Chugging some high octane dark roast & listening this a.m. - what a rippin' set! My heart is gonna be racin' all morning.

Thanks for all the time you put into this Norm! Must have been equal parts agony and joy based on that post about a week ago where you'd trimmed the list to 150 cuts.

Victory Lap! ( do a "Part 2"! Yes )

Submitted RFB to iTunes in 2007. Unfortunately, the show that was up the week I submitted it featured an extremely nasty intro by Dolemite, which may have a lot to do with iTunes rejecting it. I tried again a year later with no response whatsoever. Until then, follow the instructions Rich helpfully posted.

In other news, glad to see so many happy campers digging the latest brilliance submitted by the Cabrera Fambly!

Great show, Norm! Greatly enjoyed it, especially Opus 1's Back Seat '38 Dodge - wow, that's some WILD $#!+ right there! Also very cool to hear the original Devil Driver's Theme, never heard that before.

I'll take issue with one thing, though - I really doubt that's Ritchie Podolor playing lead on that Superstocks track. It doesn't sound like him at all. I always figured that Podolor only played lead on the Superstocks instro tracks (who knows about the vocals) on the Surf Route 101 album, but not the instro tracks from the other albums. They just sound nothing like him, and he had a fairly strong voice and identity as a guitarist. Anyway, that's my little nitpick. I'll be happy to be proven wrong, though.

Anyway, great job! Thanks!

Thanks again fellas! And thanks again Whorehay for letting me do the show... and for the beer! Yes

Ivan, it's possible it could also be Jerry Cole, Glenn Campbell, Billy Strange, Art Munson or Dick Burns on that track. No one has ever done a truly comprehensive book on this stuff. John Blair says he's working on a new edition of his Hot Rod Music book. Can't wait for that! The AFM Union Cue sheets would reveal all of these secrets. I've seen a handful of them. I would certainly welcome more light shed on this stuff!

One of my favorite songs from that era. It was inspired by Ed Keinholz's artwork of the same name:

There's an organic eeriness to this song, like it just fell together from a jam session and it was so cool that hey had to make a record of it. It really is an exciting song for me. Here it is on youtube for those of you who haven't downloaded the podcast:

Indeed, Danny. Keinholz's Back Seat 38 Dodge is a very spooky art piece. The Opus I song lyrics say "why can't I see, what's in the backseat", which always made the song feel really eerie to me. Keinholz did an even more disturbing sculpture called "Five Card Stud" that was recently on display at LACMA.

BTW, was Opus 1 a real band or a fake band?

Geez Whorehay, didn't you pay attention to your own show! Big Grin Opus I were Psych Rockers from SoCal that recorded this one shot Hot Rod record in '66 quite late for the Hot Rod Craze. They also cut this cool psych tune "In My Mind" around the same time... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwYBMjsktgg
