Not a real video, but who are these guys?
Just discovered them this morning and get hooked at the moment.

The band is quite well known due to that "X-L3" was included on the Diggin' Out! comp. However, as far as I know, very little is known about them. Checking John Blair's discography only reveals that the record label was from Riverside, California (which makes it likely that the band also hailed from Southern California). The flip side was a vocal called "My Little Baby" and the 45 was issued with a picture sleeve, and that's about it.

Thank you Klas, so they are still a mystery. Making honor to their band name, they strongly remind me The Phantom Surfers, wich I really like.

Big fan of this single! Too bad they didn't do more.

Actually they might have done two more singles but under a different band name. I had a look at the Diggin' Out! liner notes which says that the "X-L3" single was also issued under the band name The Majestics. And checking Blair's discography for that band name came up with two 45s by The Majestics (of "Big Noise From Makaha" fame) that were released by the same Riverside label as The Phantoms single!

I got an e-mail from Les who was a member of The Phantoms and the writer of "X-L3". Here's what he wrote:

In response to the above info., The Phantoms (which I was a member of) was a band that was formed in 1962 and we resided in Beaumont, CA.
After playing locally for a few months we got the opportunity to go into a recording studio in Riverside, Ca (SAM records). The singer of the group had written a song called “My Little Baby” and wanted to record it on a 45 rpm but about a week before we were to record, we were informed that we needed another song for the “B” side of the record. Therefore, I took some time and wrote an instrumental surf song that I named “X-L3” and put it on the record.
The youtube photo that’s displayed is a copy of the actual record sleeve which was scanned on a copy machine back in the 70’s. That’s why the photo quality isn’t that great.

As he didn't mention The Majestics, I assume they weren't the same band after all.

To KLAS:

I was the founding member of The Majestics who a year later went on to form the Sho_Men, so, your post caught my interest.

Let me explain.

In consideration that: 1) I recorded three (3) instrumental records under the "SAM" label, a publisher in Riverside, CA whose name was Leona Leivas; 2) the Phantom's also recorded on Leona's label; and 3) my Sho-Men continue to perform, because you have made contact with Les, one of the Phantom's, I would apperciate it if you would provide me with a contact number for Les.

I have a couple of Les's recordings that I found in my mom's garage some time back and if we could re-connect we might be able to rekindle our pasts from our expereices recording at the Locy studio in the early sixties.

ALthough the studio that Leona used has since been torn down, the Locy studio was converted into a Mexikan restaurant.

Thanks,

Joey G

Unfortunately I hadn't kept the e-mail from Les but got the impression he was the one who put up the video so you should be able to contact him through his YouTube channel.

Interesting to hear about the Majestics connection. One can still wonder why the label also released "X-L3" credited to the Majestics although it wasn't exactly uncommon in those days that labels took great liberties in changing around credits.

Thanks Klas. I will take your suggestion and move over to the Youtube.

Les, from the Phantoms dropped me an e-mail and lo and behold he lives within a 45 minute drive from my crib. We've exchanged e-mails and not only did we share musical interests from our youth we later took the same career paths into law enforcement.

The older I get (67) the more I realize what a small world we live in. Last month when my band was playing our surf stuff Parker, AZ I ran into a guy who was stationed at a local military base in Riverside in the early sixties. He later wrote to me to relate that he had some Phantoms memorabilia. Darn! I was hoping he had written to inform me that he found some goodies from my bands back in 1961. I guess the Phantoms had more moola than my bands, which in those days would not need to be that much.
