R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts" was released as a single in 1993 and became a generational anthem. The song was chosen to raise money for the victims of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, for which R.E.M. agreed to waive all royalties. To the surprise of many, R.E.M. announced in September this year that they were splitting up.
