Permalink Latin'ia Drum Part

New Topic

I am trying to learn the Sentinals version of Latin'ia. I hear three distinct percussion parts. There is a clave, a standard ride and snare (with the strainer off) and bongos. Does this sound right? I have the ride down, but the bongo/ snare part is throwing me off. My guess is the snare is standard surf beat on 2, &, and 4 with bongos playing over that. If anyone has this written out or knows where I can watch a video, please let me know. Thanks!

Check out The Eliminators video from 2007. It's a good interpretation and an example on how to pull it off in a practical manner.

Thanks!!

Just saw this port and thought I'd chime-in. First off, that Eliminator's vid is great and the drumming sounds awesome. One of the biggest challenges any drummer can have is trying to play a groove that is accomplished in the studio with overdubs or multiple players. Latin'ia is a perfect example with the clave rhythm.

When I listened to The Sentinals' version, I hear the following rhythm that could easily be played on the snare (with snares thrown-off).

1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & | 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &

Notes in bold played on snare.

This basic pattern is repeated, with variations made for the latter half of each measure (as well as accents) to add interest. Anyway, maybe this will help you get a little closer to the groove you're striving for?

I've actually been working on a few songs that have a basic surf rhythm overlaid with a clave' beat. One approach is to try and play the clave' on the hi-hat. I've never been good at playing polyrhythms, so this can be challenging. In some songs, the clave' is so strong, it's actually easier (and sounds more like the original) to simply abandon the snare parts and play the clave' using cross-sticking on the snare.

Yay, drum talk on a guitar-centric message board! Best of luck and let us know what you come up with!
