@Danny: What kind of Tube Screamer do you use and how do you set it?

Do you use it in this song?

Nope, I use a clean boost called Boosta Grande. Mel gets enough dirt for both of us with his mosrites, so I try to keep it clean with just the amp distorting a bit.

For the Tmen I use the TS808 reissue.

It's surfy overdrive or distortion where tubes and a few digital tube emulators shine. The solid state effects (and most digital tube emulators) I've used are too rough, raspy, grindy, or bass-deficient punchless. Some of the solid state effects are "pretty good," such as those built into Vox and Carvin solid state amps, and the Rat. Still, they are no match for the Ibanez Tube King, the all-tube Traynor Class A amp, or the Line 6 POD. The Rat has no bass punch. Distortion is what tube amps (and high quality emulators) are all about (except for Fenders of course).

I have used modelled amps and pedals - and the closest I seem to get to the tone from the old Atlantics records my folks used to play me is cranking or boosting - more overdrive than distortion; I'm running a bunch of different amps and use either a BajaTech booster or a MXR Micro Amp.
The MI Audio Blues Pro overdrive pedal with a little tweaking towards the trebly end can give a great ragged Strat tone.
I have seen an OD pedal after a reverb pedal produce an awesome tone in less than typical surf amps.
More of a "clang" than a "twang"?

i use an ocd with the drive at like %5-%10 and it does a really good job giving just a little bit of crunch and raw attitude without actually sounding over driven or distorted

I'm currently lusting for this thing:

300 bucks Shock . Sheesh, I know should to get my Reverb and amp situation sorted first (currently FRV and BJr. not bad but not really good...) but this thing is tempting. So versatile, and the treat is that it runs all 3 circuits in parallel, with hi/lo cut on each channel and a summing stage EQ. And the buttons are real shiny!

Sounds really good in the video. Maybe I try one of these to boost my Surfer. Its too clean... Very Happy

Which effects do you use in this video?

I'm using the Tube Screamer in that video. I set it on about a third of the way up.

Thanks Danny! Do you mean the Boosta Grande or the TS808? I guess you mean the TS808. So you set Overdrive, Level and Tone to a third of the way up?

Two thumbs up for your playing! Very Happy

I actually love surf guitar with dirt. That's the style I like to use in my solos. Just reverb, tube dirt (Fender Deluxe tube amp cranked up and drive to about 3 or 4) and the occasional either Rockabilly Slap-back or Tremelo. That makes the sound just damn cool.
