I'm surprised any kid wants to start playing these days. The current music is pretty lame compared to the last 50 years. Also, figure at 15, he wasn't even born when Guns and Roses was(were?) relevant. If he's got an interest at all, teach him what he wants. Hopefully, you'll learn something, and then it'll be worth while.

Current mass-market music is as lame as it has been for the past 50 years(granted the 50s and part of the 60s lacked on shock value). It is a cycle that repeats itself. There is still really great music being made today, probably the same ratio of good music made today as there ever has been.
Every kid wants to start playing these days. Learning guitar is cheaper and cooler than it ever has been.

Have you seen Rocksmith? It is like guitar hero that works with a real guitar. So now a kid can buy a Les Paul and use it as a game controller.

I just looked up the Rocksmith video...
Little more than im lost on Guitar hero where I have to look
at the TV set and push the button like a Chimp on a mercury space capsule
with Rocksmith I have to look at the TV and then my fingers then strum the chord then the computer adjusts to how bad I am...
To hard for my little brain...Im continuing with the old school method..
Tabs and listening to the song 25 times in a row !
Jake where are all these Kids that want to learn guitar ? None at my house..
I get 1 with hurt fingers and A Starcaster.
Ill will admit its a hell of a lot Cheeper..When I was a kid the guitar was from Sears or the Lafayette Electronics store ..The local music shop stuff was way to expensive..The amp was the Radio Shack stereo and some speakers..
Now we have all these cheepo guitar stores with their starter sets....
Now you are a star !
