Permalink Molding a young bass player for surf/instro music

My name is Greg and I play surf.

Have been working to bring to life a surf instro band here in NE Ohio for the last three yrs. Myself on rhythm, a lead guitar and drummer have been the core. Bass players have been difficult to snag. We three are all 50+ and have been in a few bands over the years. The bassists we have brought in in our age group have the view there is no call for an instro music in our region, or they need to play six nights a week. The concept is to work once or twice a month, have a good time and make a few scheckels doing it.

To fill the void I drafted my nephew, 25yrs old with training in bass clef tuba and sousaphone for highschool band. I have dosed him with a good ammount of music to listen to /learn. He has a good ear and holds tight to the root note, but you know he is waiting to hear the note before he plays it. A constant millisecond delay instead of being "on".

How do I train the lad to get in the grove (if it were a video game he would be on it)??

All advce is welcome

I would just tell him that he has the freedom to, with the drummer, develop and hold the tempo. He spent high school watching somebodies hands for the timing, he just needs to know now that he and the drums are the time, anticipate what is coming.

He is new to playing bass, he will pick it up. He will diversify his playing in due time if he is passionate about it. Don't try to mold him into a certain style, that would likely set him back.
