Permalink Recording tips with garage band with mac books built in mic

im trying to record some simple demos with garage band and my mac books built in mic

anyone have tips on getting the best possible sound with that set up?

im noticing that my tracks are kind of tinny and thin sounding at first and i have to some EQing and compressing to get the sound i want, id rather have to do as little of that as possible

im running a strat ->reverb unit ->princton reverb RI

I've done a few recordings with the built-in mic on my eMac, but only when I'm quickly (and crudely) 'jotting' down a riff or tune that's popped into my head to stow away for future reference/development. The recording quality with the mac's inbuilt mic is dire.

However I have used garbage band for getting some demo's of my home made amps in the past (and will continue to do so), but the set-up I use for that is:

  • Amp mic'd with SM57 at a distance of 6" from the speaker
  • Mic into my desk (which has a mic preamp for each channel)
  • Stereo line-level output from my desk into the external stereo mic on my eMac (and thence into garbage band).

One day I'll get a new Mac and better recording software, but for now this gives reasonable dry signal. FWIW here is an example of a BFPR clone I made dry-mic'd with that recording set-up (the lead on the 3rd 'verse' is with the reverb footswitch off).

Teeny little mics give tinny sound, just like teeny speakers give tinny sound.

I always recommend the Blue Snowball mic. It's pretty cheap and it plugs straight into your USB, and sounds great!

i actually have some good condenser mics and an sm58 laying around, i could do it right if i wanted too, i just feel like being lazy, lol

a snowball would be a good convenient thing to have though

The only problem with using sm57s and the like is that you'll have to use some sort of interface to plug it in to the computer. With the snowball, you don't need that, it just plugs straight into the USB. And I've never experienced a bit of latency whatsoever with it.

i decided to stop being such a lazy bum and drag out my lexicon lambda interface and microphones so im a little closer to legit now and a little farther away from convenience

Very true. Can't expect too too much from the built in mic.

This is an adventure.

i finally got around to finishing this recording, this is my first ever surf rock recording, feel free to rip it to pieces and tell me what i did wrong

Not too shabby. Reminds me of The Sadies.

Are you using Audacity to record? Free programme that is simple and works really well.

no im using garage band, ive used audacity and ive always had trouble with it crashing once i get more that 4 tracks running, ive use cuebase in that past but i have it installed on a computer i dont use much anymore and i remember it being a pain to install so i haven't gotten around to installing it on my new computer

so far garage band has been pretty good for quickly hashing together some demo quality stuff
