hi guys....ok here we go. i own a xaviere jazzmaster clone and for 200 and change im pretty happy with it. but i think its sounds little week in my band setting?
has anybody played the xavier and a "real" jazzmaster is there a big difference in tone.
i think(maybe a dream Confused ) i read somewhere that some people put gfs
pick ups in their jazzmaster to get better tone but i think that seems strange?

There are some interesting discussions of the Xaviere HERE and HERE.
I particularly like Ran's take on it and actually had a chance to check his out first hand at this year's Tiki Oasis.
This guitar will NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER be a Fender Jazzmaster, but for the money and with a few minor mods, definitely makes a decent backup.

thanks jonpaul seems people are pretty happy with them.
im just thorne over if im going too buy a jazzmaster or reverb unit first?
maybe i`ll go for the tank first. my brother has a mexican strat so i could
play lead with that and he could play the xaviere hhhmmmm decisions decisions

I was interested in getting one of these as well, until I saw the new Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster. Going to hold out and buy one of those for just a bit more than the Xaviere. Will be a much better instrument and certainly more mod-worthy.

I have been very happy with my Xaviere "surf king" in live, loud gig situations. The stock pickups are very strong output, too. I think if you were at a gig where the guitar player was using one of these, and you had your back to the stage, it would be very challenging to determine whether it was a Fender Jazzmaster or not. Just sitting in a room, with an amp, and going back and forth between a Xaviere and a Jazzmaster, there would be things that you would notice, but it really delivers nicely in a gig, in my experience.

fenderfan: I bet they are good guitars for the money. I would like to hear some good sound clips. If they use the same GFS JM pickups it should sound pretty decent. Those are nice pickups!

It's very brief, but we found out that a video which had been shot at a car show we played at contained a little footage of us playing. It's at about the 3:05 mark, and the sound was just being picked up by the built-in microphone on the guy's video camera, so it's nothing great, but I did use the Xaviere that day, and it worked very well...

That did sound pretty good, but what's the old adage... Great guitar, crappy amp, crappy sound. Great amp, most any guitar, good (or better) sound. You clearly have the amp side of the equation well covered.

El Mirage & Mondo Guitaro

The ones I've played sounded great!

I guess if I really wanted that JM/Jag sound though I'd go for a Fender. Personally, I like something a bit different than the norm though.

I'm still doing back-flips over the Agile SX Liquid I ordered a while back! Can't believe what I got for the $$$ ??

METEOR IV on reverbnation

I'd get the Xaviere over a Fender Classic Player or the J Mascis Squier, as they're all basically the same and the Xaviere is much cheaper. But yeah, an MIJ with replacement pickups or an AVRI will sound different than those other guitars.

Sorry, I have not be a very active SG101 user lately (like the last 5 years), so I missed this.
Since I have both, I gotta tell you, I could really feel the difference in the way it plays because of the different location of the tailpiece Vs. the bridge. BUT notice that ALL cheap Fender/Squier JM types suffer from the same design flaw (well, they think it's an improvement, I don't like it). It did get better with use, but just know that I play that guitar mainly unplugged when I force myself to practice at home.
In band context it does not sound the same to me, but it's close enough for a backup guitar.
Consider this:
This one is closer in its features to an AVRI JM than the lesser Fender/Squier models. It has 2 JM type pickups. It does not have a hard tail. It does not have a stupid Strat type input plug (yuch!). It is very cheap.
If you have it, I would get a reverb unit first, then tweak it until it sounds great (tubes, caps, pan).
Then you can start looking at your options, which as far as I see are:
Used Japanese JM and a few easy mods like pickups and tremolo.
Used AVRI JM.
All the rest are not worth the trouble in my opinion, unless you have free parts and can do modifications on your own.

Hope this helps somewhat.

Ran

The Scimitars

hi ran that actually helps allot and confirms my previous thoughts. i have made up my mind that i think a reverb unit will help my tone the most, since i have a xaviere and a mex strat at hand..

cheers
