Inspired by the bump of Klas's thread about the Surfites new 45.
I was wondering who on SG101 has a turntable?
and do you buy current releases by bands on vinyl,
Or are you just a retro vinyl person?
I'm 50/50 new and old.
If you had a don't have a turntable now, but got one soon,
would you buy current bands records?
Especially if there was exclusive songs on the releases,
not available on the cd, or download?

I just threw away my CD player. I exclusively buy vinyl these days, they sound so much better. And yes, I buy new releases and stuff made in the past. It is cheaper to buy first pressings than most reissues. I got first pressings of all of the New Order/Smiths/Joy Division records for about $10 each on average, versus $25 average new. Discogs.com is an amazing resource for buying used vinyl.

I've got one of those USB-enabled turntables for making MP3s off of vinyl records (which works quite well). But I'm strictly a retro vinyl person - have a decent sized collection of music on 45's and 12" singles, a lot of which doesn't seem to exist on CD.

+1 for "wishes I (still) had one". Right now it's just CD's and digital downloads, but plan to get a USB-enabled turntable when space isn't an issue. I don't miss the pops and hisses of my old stereo, but I do miss that whole "ritual".

Jake, since you like the Space Cossacks so much,
do you have these 7in. records with exclusive tracks?

I still have my old Technics linear tracking turntable I bought back in the early 80's and it works like a champ. The only new vinyl I have is the Ghastly Ones' "Gears n' Ghoulfinks" 45, the rest was bought back in my teens and twenties.

If I know that a 45 or LP has a bonus track, I will buy them.
And still buy the cd for playing in my truck.

I almost never buy cd's, I buy vinyl or digital.
I definitely need more surf on vinyl though.

Absolutely! I've got the Space Cossacks/Penetrators split as well. My favorite piece of surf vinyl is the Bambi Molesters Coastal Disturbance from 1996 on red vinyl. I've never seen it for sale anywhere else since I got my copy.

Re: the new question, not just yes, but hell yes. I would immediately rip them for use in my car and continue to mostly listen them in digital, but I would initially prefer this type of format over a CD or Amazon/iTunes download, no question.

I have a turntable, which I try to keep in order, and a large collection of records that I bought when that was all there was and would never consider getting rid of. (My children are also not for sale.) I still buy records when that's the only form in which I can get something old. I do buy new releases "on vinyl," if they are the only source of something or just look pretty, or I want to do somebody a favor.
I should say that I feel a certain shame when I use the obsolete term "record," but in spite of this "vinyl" feels awkward in my mouth. Like I'm translating something: "a record, or what your generation might call a piece of vinyl, I think." I do still listen to records from time to time. I prefer CDs and actually mostly it's digital stuff these days.
I don't mind digital downloads, especially for isolated songs I want to hear, and I'll do them if that's all there is for something out of print.
If my hearing were good enough that I could tell the difference between digital and analog as opposed to simply good and bad (or old and worn) product, I would maybe worry more about format. I can't afford to worry about the coolness of the format as opposed to the coolness of the content. If the coolness of the format were an issue, the immediate problem would be that I am in an uncool format myself.
I try to keep everything I can available in digital form. Most of my records will never get there, for want of time. Plus they sound better (or at least righter) as records. But what I like about having a CD (or a record) somewhere is that there's still some chance of meaningful notes and the occasional nice picture or graphic, not to mention a residual feeling I have that songs go in a certain order and fit together as "albums." (Plus, you should have to stop and turn something over midway through any esthetic experience. Wait. Was that records or something else? I forget.)
"Records" - those round things before CDs.

Good question, Jeffe.
After many years of not owning a turntable and waiting to find just the right one "in the wild," I recently finally did.
Lemme tell ya, I couldn't be happier!
There's just something so special and almost "sacred" about going through the collection and choosing to play a particular record.
First, there's the larger canvas for cool graphics/artwork. Record covers are one of the greatest forms of graphic design EVER, and can really be appreciated through the larger format.
Second, there's the smell. Call me strange, but I love the smell of an old record and it's sleeve. Every time the record is taken out, it's like uncovering some precious relic.
Third, and certainly not least, there's the sound. Man, nothing comes close to the pure auditory impact of vinyl. The clarity, richness and fullness are still unrivaled by any other media (IMHO) and there's just something about those pops and crackles that gets ya going, especially when listening to older, more nostalgic music (like we all do!).
The best part of the current vinyl manufacturing movement is that people have finally gotten hip to including a digital download when one purchases the vinyl. This can be the best of both worlds--vinyl for serious home listening and the download for practical, on-the-go listening.
We are lucky to be experiencing this revival right now! Let's hope it continues!

The only problem with vinyl is that I can't listen to records in my car, and ripping them to mp3s is kind of a chore. I don't really care about sound quality through my ultra-budget sound system, but vinyl is just more fun for me. I mostly buy cds of new releases for convenience, and cds/digital downloads usually come out well before the vinyl is pressed.
Plus crate digging is lots of fun, even if you rarely find surf.

the Older and more outta shape I get, the harder/more painful it is to kneel down or sit on the ground, and go thru hundreds or thousands of records.
But when I have spent the time effort to do it, I have always found at least 1 record that I ended up buying.
sadly, lately I can't afford to go record hunting.
and have just been buying cds from bands coming thru on tour,
or new releases by bands from afar.
But even then, I'm getting behind on everything coming out.
Some of my best vinyl finds have been at Amoeba in LA,
(First Halibuts record with 3d glasses 2 bucks) mint condition.
and at Lou's in Encinitas. (A almost perfect copy of Stampede by Jon and the Nightriders for 5 bucks)
