I've always heard the story as being from the Chantays, and that Dick hated Pipeline because they had a huge hit with it, and they had used his tank for it. all Hear say of course, but Thats what I was told when someone requested pipeleine once, and he said oh you mean sewerline.
makes you wonder???

I have never heard that story, but who knows? I would find it ironic for him to hate that song so much, then record it with SRV. Not to mention he should hate the Beach Boys more, since they had too may hits to count, and being labeled "Surf Music". But I guess we will never know.

Well who knows. Dick may in fact hate Pipeline. But one day he gets a call asking him if he wants to record a version with SRV. Of course he will say yes. But he does play it live, so hopefully he doesn't hate it. Then again he may feel he has to play it because of the Grammy nomination. OTOH, his show is pretty self-indulgent, so I would assume he really is doing what he likes. This is all speculation on my part and I'll be quiet now.

You make valid points. I doubt we will ever know the truth. Ive heard so many rumors in the music buisness in general, so who knows what to believe.I used to work at MCA music, and heard lots of rumors floating around. Most seem to be "A friend of a friend told me" kind of stuff. Most people here dont like Dicks and SRVs version of Pipeline, but I like it. Its different from the original. I dont like when someone covers a song, and plays it just like the original. To me thats boring. Although SRV s parts are a little "bluesy", its still a good version in my opinion.

Edward's two cents worth....
Hummmmm. Our boy Leo was a pretty crafty dude and even though DD was like his adopted son, those Astronauts' guys had a MAJOR record deal (which Dick did not.) Steve Shoals had inked them an eight record package. My guess is that whatever they wanted to borrow and carry up the street to an RCA recording session was NO problem.....ed
Humm... Didnt they land the RCA deal in 63`, the same year DD signed with Capitol Records?

I believe Ampeg was selling the Reverberocket Amp some time before Fender was selling their Vibroverb, or the outboard unit. But there probably weren't too many Ampeg amps in California at that time.
...and a great Reverb it is
