Within the listening area of the local radio station, it'd probably be cool to use a guitar instrumental arrangement of Bert Kaempfert's "A Swingin' Safari." Back in the '70s, when it was a Top 40 rock station, they had a weekly call-in radio classifieds show called The Sell & Swap Shop that used the song as the show theme song. At some point last year, I found out that the song was the original theme for the TV game show, Match Game. So, locally, folks will get a dose of nostalgia connected to the radio show, while anywhere else, folks that remember the original Match Game, and/or dig Bert Kaempfert and His Orchestra will get that dose of nostalgia. Besides, "A Swingin' Safari" is one that should get folks dancing.

BrazilÂ´s "The Clevers" (later known as "Os IncrÃveis") have covered this one in the sixties. The lead line is played on sax. IÂ´ll put it on the downloads area.

i recorded a cover of Pipeline, in my own solo-techno style, and this dj on and indie-internet radio station used to use it as her opening for her show, and it played in the background whenever she talked on air, i though it was ok cause it was the closest thing to surf music they had on their site, not like i was preaching to the converted. never claimed it as my own..but

this might be getting off topic....there was this blues band in my city, who had an old surf guitar guy in it( complete with bandana ala DD) and they did Bombora by the Atlantics, and it was the best song in their set. seeing a bunch of redneck blues guys going flat out on a surf instro to a room full of bikers and rock 'n roll dancers, and watching every one just lovin' it! it was life changing moment for me, and for those 3 minutes time stood still..they owned that song right there and then...

"walk, don't run" seems to be a Ventures signature tune...but, I believe it's a cover tune (Johnny Smith, Chet Atkins)...or rather a "re-arranged" tune.

FYI, The original WDR was a jazz tune written by Johnny Smith. I had the LP until I lent it to someone that I never saw again The original was VERY different from what the Ventures did. Hey Joel,
Just to chime in here, and bring the discussion back to the original posting a bit...

I think, as others have said, if you're going to cover a band's song, make it your own. That doesn't mean re-arranging it or anything, but you can tweak the little things like tempo, tone, and especially the drummer can make things really different.

It's not an uncommon thing, and I've seen some bands do GREAT things. For instance, think of PDM or The Madeira doing Surf Coasters songs - they are contemporaries, but they put their own spin on the songs and make it their own. On the latest CD, The Nebulas do both a Satan's Pilgrims song and a Ghastly Ones song, and both are KILLER, though clearly given the "nebulous treatment".

Hope that helped a little, and wasn't too redundant.
