Permalink Should I get a Marshall?

New Topic

Well, I've got Fenders galore, my surf needs are more than adequately covered. I've got Vox amps for garagy sixties stuff (although I'll use my Fenders for that too).

Lately I've been jonesing for a JCM 800... I haven't played any Stooges or Dolls for a long time, but I have this thing where I want a Marshall head and a 2 x 12 cabinet, just in case...

Is it just a more extreme form of mental illness? Does anybody else suffer from this? I mean, ordinary GAS is bad enough, but when you're jonesing for amps you may not even use..?

Isn't it great that there isn't a rule that you can only have one guitar and amp at a time? But beware of the collector bug. It eats money. Then you end up on Hoarders. Big Grin

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

If money and room space were no object, in addition to my surfy gear I'd have a wall of double stacked Marshalls on one side of my music room and 12 AC 30's stacked along the other... just in case Zak Wylde or Brian May ever wanted to jam. Big Grin

If money permits, why not!? Just buy used and try to break even if you decide you don't want it anymore. I'd love to get a stoner/doom rig myself for the hell of it (Marshall, Matamp, Orange, etc. with either an SG or LP...); surf obsession is expensive enough though.

tis beautiful

Well, I'll probably grab it... The one I'm looking at is a very clean, mid-80s CSA 2204 (metal togle switches instead of plastic, plus EL34s, etc) that I can get for $900... don't see that manya available, and they usually go for more money, so I think it's ok financially.

But then what happens when I see a brownface Showman, or Bandmaster (there's one of those at a shop just around the corner), for example? It also has a very clean Supro amp, but I'm not even gonna go there. But I'm starting to think that if I grab this marshall, I'm only asking for more trouble down the road... same trouble'll be there if I don't get the marshall, of course...

Mario, that was actually my rig right before getting into surf music: a JCM-800 with a 2x12 cab. Had it from '93 until '96, when I traded it for a reissue AC-30. The model I had was 2210, 100W with two channels. The thing was a rager. I bought it quite cheaply, I think the head was something like $500, and the cab about $250. Not bad!

Anyway, good luck! I (very occasionaly) get a jones for a JCM-2000 to live out my classic-rock/metal fantasies, but it usually passes way before I do anything silly!

That looks ungodly loud, so I guess it'll do.

I'm disoriented, feeling dizzy....where am I?

Yes! I hated Marshalls for years. One day I went to jam with a friend. I brought my Music Man 100RD head which I had been hooked on for 25 years, and my 4x12 Marshall cab. He head a 50w mid '80s JCM800 head, so I tried it. Dude, it was as if someone pulled a pile of blankets off the cabinet! So much more articulation, clarity, harmonic complexity, responsiveness, etc.
So, I had to have one. I bought a 50w plexi reissue, but that didn't get it done. I then bought the same year and model JCM800, but it had the wrong tubes. Converted it to EL34s by the same guy that worked on his head, and still didn't match the sound. Finally, we had to put both heads on the bench and match them up component for component, brand for brand, value for value. Something as seemingly insignificant as the brand of a pot can make so much difference in the sound.
The lesson I took away from this experience is yes, Marshalls can suck, especially the ones in the rehearsal studios, but the right model in the hands of the right technician is pure effin' magic!

Eric

Something that a lot of people forget is that the original Marshall amps were direct copies of the tweed Fender Bassman circuit, but manufactured with european components. It's funny how much of a difference (seemingly) relatively insignificant components can make. (Ken Fischer made a career out of this knowledge). I like the Marshall sound for a lot of rock and power blues-rock, but Marshalls have generally always had more mids than I care for. The more hi-fi, scooped tones of the 60's Fenders (brown /black/ silver) always appealed to me more. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with Marshalls. I particularly love the sound of a good JCM800 peeling the paint off the walls.

Bob

Too true about the 6G6-B circuit, Robbie. I had a Marshall JCM800 full stack back in the 80's, and it makes a lot of sense that I gravitated towards the same circuit now... maybe the sound became ingrained!

I have never once played through a Marshall and enjoyed the experience, but that's just me.

Los Fantasticos

I love Marshall's! For Rock and Roll or metal there perfect...
I have a 50w 800 combo and a 2210 (100 watt 800 head two channels)
and a JMP 100W.

I was actually thinking that I was going to get rid of the 2210 head. I use my combo for rock gigs and the JMP and a Hiwatt for stoner band and I don't use the 2210

I would do $900 shipped if you want it. Its the same as my combo. I thought I would use it for rock gigs but the combo works better for that. Small and easy.

Not that he's got a surf sound by any stretch, but I believe Gerry McGee was using a Marshall in the 93 Ventures in Japan video.
