To all who worked to make this happen and who came to support it, thank you very much!

Of course I couldn't capture it all. Went to the Thursday gig in Fullerton, The Tequila Worms opened but could have just as easily been the headliners, all three bands that night were awesome. Great playing and total energy. They were followed by the Razorblades, for the first of seeing them three times in a row. Great vibe and interaction with the crowd. Fantastic playing and music, just unreal. Slacktone ended the night, with Sam in on bass it was an amazing set, they always bring it.

Up early (funny couldn't sleep, my ears were ringing, but in a good way) for the Fender tour. I think everyone was blown away by the shear number of guitars being produced and the effort put into making them. Just incredible to see the processes involved, so glad to be invited. I had to be in San Diego that afternoon, so I caught the Friday San Diego show, or part of it due to sleep-deprivation, Secret Samurai opened and they are rapidly becoming a favorite of mine. Followed by the Razorblades for more uber-intensity surf & rock. At that point, I needed sleep but after seeing Saturday's show I wish I would have waited for Daikaiju.

Saturday up to the Starting Gate, got there a little later than I planned so I only caught the last half of Surfer Joe's Boss Combo, but what I heard was great. Lot of energy, especially for that early in the morning. Member jam was good, with some interesting song selections which kept it interesting. Legends followed, Paul Johnson, Dick Dodd, doing the Belairs (without bass like the originals), then an Eddie & the Showmen set. Davie Allan & the Arrows (Dusty Watson & Mike Vernon) followed, I really dig his fuzz guitar sound (duh). Alright, my memory is getting hazy and this is getting long. All the bands were fantastic and brought their A-game to the event. Bought lots of CD's and shirts, will get it onto the iPhone and I'm sure I have some gems there.

Final highlight was winning the surfboard. I will cherish it for sure and feel honored to have it (thanks Dave for grabbing me outside to let me know I'd won).

Dave Arnson - thanks for the excellent MC'ing.

Jeff BTD - wow, this was about as perfect as it gets. Thanks for all you do.

The Starting Gate - thanks for the food & drink, and thanks for providing the place.

Bands from near and far, thanks for the great playing, showmanship, and sounds, a memorable event for sure.

What a great weekend - thanks to Jeff BTD for putting the whole shebang together, thanks to those who helped, those who came and those who played!

Mel

Thanks Chris,
Great coverage,
Very fun!!

Twas yet another fantastic convention put together by Jeff and his supporting crew! Unfortunately, this was the first year that I didn't attend the entire day long convention as I had my son with me and was afraid he wouldn't be able to make it the entire day. But, after seeing his reaction, I think he would have been just fine!

We walked in during Bradipos IV's set and they were just stunning. I had seen them the week prior when we played with them at Forbidden Island, but they sounded so great in a big room with ample volume. A very romantic take on instro surf! Loved it.

Then came the beast that is Daikaiju. My son is pretty enamored with their on-stage personna (he has a thing for "bad guys") As I fully anticipated, they blew the roof off of The Starting Gate. As they did the night prior in San Diego, they turned the table on the crowd and filled the stage with the crowd and played to them from the ground. Something my son will probably never forget! He was beyond stoked!

Another highlight was obviously getting the chance to see Satan's Pilgrims (one of my favorite surf bands) live for the first time. Such a great set and I was thrilled that they played Badge of Honor!!

Kudos to Jeff, for putting on such an incredible event that continues to grow and improve each year. Did anybody else dig the lighting this year? What an improvement over years past!!

It was great to see everybody again and to meet some new folks. I really wish I had more time to talk with everybody!

I am doing 4 separate SURF VIDEOS threads from the following venues during the SG101 CONVENTION WEEK-END:

1) THE PURPLE ORCHID Aug 12 2011
2) THE SURF GUITAR 101 CONVENTION itself Aug 13 2011
3) DON THE BEACHCOMBER's (SLACKTONE) Aug 13 2011
4) HUNTINGTON BEACH PIER Aug 14 2011

I will create FLICKR files for each of these venues as well, and post the direct links in whichever thread they belong

The first thread has started (PURPLE ORCHID 8/12/11):
http://surfguitar101.com/forums/topic/15975/

Along the way I suspect I will need help with song titles, who did the original versions, and undoubtedly some of the titles I have designated will need correcting. Please feel free to post corrections in the threads I've created, if you are so inclined.

I've been falling asleep feeling like I'm floating on a sea of reverb every night since the convention!

From being blown away by new bands that I wasn't much aware of like The Bradipos IV & The Tequila Worms, to seeing many familiar favorites - this weekend just keeps gets better every year and I only wish I had the energy and dedication to see it all from front to back. I came away totally inspired and plan on stepping it up.

Thanks to Jeff BTD, all of the bands who played, the nice and interesting people I met, the great staff at the Purple Orchid & The Starting Gate - to everyone involved, basically!

Jeff,

Congratulations, and sincere thanks, for all of your work in making this event happen, inviting us to be a part of this, and for your kind hospitality, even in the midst of all your running around with event-related activities.

It honestly was a fantastic event all around-- great people, great locales, dynamite music, and a rat-a-tat schedule that left me breathless and reeling (literally) at times. You even had the weather co-operating, as far as us arctic-dwellers are concerned. It was weird playing shows in the morning and early afternoon, but it only added to the surrealism of being in So Cal where it all basically started and being even remotely involved in an event of this force and magnitude.

The planning and administration involved on your part reveals some pretty impressive management talents-- if you can execute this and stay sane, you should be put in charge of tackling your country's debt problems. At the very least, I hope you continue to produce shows as a part-time (if not full-time) career. You certainly seem to have a knack for it.

Also, thanks again for your work in arranging gear, recommending places to stay/go, setting up the shows, communicating regularly, etc etc etc.-- and for throwing the bar-be-cue on Friday afternoon, which I thought was a fantastic way to get everybody mixing in anticipation of the convention itself. I'm sorry I missed the Fender factory tour (and Satan's Pilgrims, duh!) but at a certain point, something had to give, and I needed to let the engine cool down a bit to keep it going the rest of the way.

It was great to see old friends & acquaintances like Tena, Dave Arenson, Carol (momsurfing), Ivan, Brian N., Kay & Jim, and others, as well as make new friendships with the Cocktail Preachers, Tequila Worms, Bradipos IV, Lorenzo, and so many others there's no way I'll keep all the names straight. And meeting some of my heros-- PJ, Davie Allan, Dickie Dodd, and then Dick Dale-- was amazing. Where else was that going to happen?

Pete and Bob (and the women who love them) had a great time too. Apart from the music, we enjoyed lots of Mexican food and fresh fruit and funny drinks with twizzly sticks, on top of a thousand beers a day. The shows were all well paced and we appreciated the warm reception for a bunch of over-age surf-punks like us.

Thanks again for everything, including your kind words on Saturday about your visit to Toronto. I hope we get together again soon. I've been talking to Pete already and I'm getting the sense that the Great Lakes Surf Battle in TO this year is gonna be better than ever, too. So whether we get together down there, or up here, we're guaranteed some rock'n'roll action.

Best regards,

Mario

Here are some photos from the historical tour on Monday morning. Present were: Big Tiki Dude, Carol (MomSurfing), John (Tuck), Mike and Sandy Rosado (The 9th Wave), Lorenzo and His Boss Combo (Luca, Francesco, Coreado, Tomi), and me. A great group of people and a very enjoyable way to spend three hours!! Thanks so much for organizing it, Jeff!

Redwood Bar & Grill, Los Angeles, CA - August 10, 2011

I got here late, thanks to bungling my flight arrangements, so I missed the Bradipos IV, but I saw the end of the Insect Surfers and all of the Razorblades and Three Balls of Fire. Everything I saw was phenomenal, and I heard the Bradipos IV were superb, too! Everyone pitied me missing them.

This night I got to see the Bradipos (=Sloth) IV, and they more than lived up to the hype everyone was spreading about them!
