OK, I'm more of a Tiki Central guy than I am an SG101 guy, but here's my post from TC (written for the Tiki peeps)...

WOW !!

Big Tiki Dude showed us the great DIVERSITY of Surf
Music yesterday with his hand picked line-up of bands.
Anyone who associates this music solely as "oldie"
music needed to be there to "wake up and smell the
coffee" (or in this case "hear the reverb", ha ha).

1) It spanned multiple generations from the First Wave
with legends like Paul Johnson and Dick Dodd to the
genre's next class of "kids" like the Deadbeats and
Tequila Worms.

These latter 2 bands played with the intensity and
passion of their youth, yet with the spirit of the
music's origins. They had me grinning from ear to ear,
especially the Tequila Worms who are our own local band
based in Anaheim.

2) Also the Deadbeats and Tequila Worms, who are
composed primarily of young Latinos, harken back to the
music's early days, when many Mexican American Surf
bands were springing up in Central California. People
tend to associate the style with just suburban White
teenagers in So Ca but even back in the early days,
that wasn't the case.

3) It showed that Surf Music has no religious
boundaries with Meshugga Beach Party. This band is
comprised of Orthodox rabbis who play Jewish folk
songs to a Surf Music beat. Ok, actually they're just
dressed up as rabbis (including the fake beards), but
they are all nice Jewish boys (and one nice Jewish
girl). Smile

4) Surf music was represented from all corners of the
globe with The Blue Demons from Canada, the Razorblades
from Germany, and the Bradipos IV from Italy. Although
all the bands were great, I think the Bradipos IV were
especially an audience favorite. These bands
illustrate the spirit of Surf Music transcending
international borders, foreign culture, and language !!
This is where some of the best music is coming from
these days.

5) The "ringer" of the day was Daikaiju, who were a
Kabuki-masked band playing Surf Music from another
dimension. Was this really "Surf Music" or was it more
akin to (brilliantly performed) instrumental
speed-metal ?? The audience was deeply divided on the
matter. Some of the traditionalists were horrified,
but as you can see from Surf Fink's comments, some
people considered Daikaiju the highlight of the day.
Regardless, BTD forced us to confront and debate the
question of "What exactly is Surf Music ?".

6) And yes, Satan's Pilgrims lived up to their great
reputation. It was a fantastic experience to see them
perform live. Also it's a sign of the Convention's
significance that THEY would ask Jeff if they could
perform there.

Tiki Central roll call: Mr & Mrs. Jason Wickedly, Chris
B., Caltiki, Tikiyaki, Kirby, Mr. & Mrs. BongoFury, TNT
(Teresa & Tim), HB Tiki, Sperm Whale & Whale Rider,
Mambo King (Whorehay) & Dana, Jonpaul & Marie, and
Kick the Reverb were among the Tikiphiles I recognized.

And hey, Tiki-dom's own Mr. J won the Fender American
Vintage ’62 Thin Skin Jazzmaster guitar raffle. Smile

Kudos, to the Starting Gate's bar, kitchen, and wait
staff. They busted their butts all day for a hungry
and thirsty crowd where it was hard to hear orders.
From what I could see, they performed with great
attitudes to a very long and non-stop day.

And last but not least..

THANK YOU Big Tiki Dude !!

This event is only going to get bigger and better, and
the future of Surf Music will only prosper as a result
of your annual milestone event.

Just to clarify... this was the song the Pilgrims closed with. Was a great song and cool to see a chick with beatnik striped shirt, tattoos, and black hair dancin her ass off with Dave Arnsen.

Thank you Tiki Jeff for inviting me down.
Cheers

JEEF BTD -- I must say you keep outdoing and reinventing yourself!! The Convention weekend was unreal, surreal, spectacular, reverb-drenched, joyous. Thxs for EVERYHTING you do for the love of the instro surf-beat genre. Videos, pix, coming eventually, as soon as I can sit down, get organized, etc.

Will there be an SG101 Video Thread?

Johnny O - thanks for a great report!

Monumental! BTD for President!
Loved all the groups, but REALLY impressed by Daikaiju and The Razorblades. As to the question, "but are they SURF?". I sure as Hell HOPE so!
Ditto the comment re. The Tequila Worms and The Deadbeats. I know we'll be hearing more from both.

My first time seeing the Tequila Worms, EXCELLENTE!!!. Me likey the fast and furious. I think they perfectly demonstrate the advantage of a kick ass drummer onboard.

I agree: the Tequila Worms' drummer was off-the hook awesome!!! Jonathan from the Deadbeats is another young drummer who blows me away. There were a lot of incredible drummers at the convention and the pre and post shows this year. Among the many great performances throughout the week, Enrique (Bradipos IV) consistantly knocked my socks off at the shows that I saw.

Such a blast!!! Every year keeps getting better. I can't wait to see what next year brings!

John-o brought up some good points about Progressive versus Traditional surf music. I wont chime in on that debate, but I will say that 12 hours of Trad would get a bit tedious and 12 hours of crazy progressive wouldn't be a surf show. I think there was a good balance this year.

Some quick thoughts about each band...

Surfer Joe & Boss Combo: Such a short set. I didn't hear much, but what I heard was really good. I'll be checking them out for sure while they're still here in the states.

SG101 Member Jam: I had a blast playing! So much fun! Didn't get to see many of the other jams because I was too busy freaking out Uh-Oh

Legends Jam, Davie tribute: Always great seeing 1st wavers jam. Davie Alan rocked! I wish his set was a few songs longer.

The Blue Demons: Loved the costumes. Very punk attitude. Great energy. Really cool guys too.

The Deadbeats: Holy crap. I LOVED this set. Bitter sweet, though, since this weekend was a "farewell tour" for them. I hope circumstances can bring this band back together someday.

The Cocktail Preachers: Nice clean surf set. Loved that Gretsch bass, and anything with a fez on it has a cool factor of 1 million. Great guys too!

Meshugga Beach Party: What's yiddish for "FREAKING AMAZING!!"?

The Tequila Worms: Third or fourth time I've seen these guys. So much energy and power. Always a pleasure.

The Bradipos IV: I felt like crying when I said goodbye to these guys last night. Best group of guys you could ever meet. And their sets (I saw them 4 times) were all INCREDIBLE. These guys are in my top 10 fave bands now. Looks like I'm saving up for a trip to Italy soon Smile

Daikaiju: Uber progressive. Not really surf. But wow what an experience. Great stage presence and theatrics. Crazy sounds. I'd like to see these guys play on a major stage in a big venue with lights and fog and a full bag of tricks.

The Razorblades: Very progressive. Hard rocking. Great stage presence and really entertaining banter in between songs. Got the crowd going.

Satan's Pilgrims: SATAN'S FREAKING PILGRIMS!!! What else can I say???

BTD: You're the man!

Insect Dave: Great MCing!

Quilter Bros: Great sound!

My ears: Thanks for working all weekend. Now please stop ringing!

And to all the folks I met: You all are awesome and I sincerely hope we can all meet again Smile

For those with "the Bug" as I like to call it, the SG101 Convention was yet another year of awesome music with friends old and new to revive one's spirit. Personal hugs and handshakes with social net friends is the best!

First, I loved and agreed with Johnny-O's (TikiCentral) review of the Saturday Convention event above. Make sure to read it. Cool cross-pollination of the "cousin communities" of Tiki and Surf.

I echo Unsteady Freddie's "Cloud9" effect. The weekend is packed with so many wonderful experiences in such a short time. It is undeniably the best for completely losing track of time and leaving you exhausted and elated. I love taking pictures. Mine will appear later in the week somewhere.

My personal highlights:
- Of course topping my list would be playing bass in an ensemble in the Members Jam with NESMA giants, Mike and Sandy from Ninth Wave and the gracious Lorenzo Valdambrini from Surfer Joe's Boss Combo. Pretty much totally cold and with no prior practice as a group, we did a groovin arrangement of The Astronauts' Movin'.
- The Tequila Worms were my personal choice for breakout band. Talent and spirit. Awesome drumming!
- The BradiposIV were the style and charm of the show.
- Daikaiju were incredibly entertaining and presented the modern Surf community with the equivalent of a "Dylan Goes Electric" moment for what's possible in the instrumental Rock realm.
- Satan's Pilgrims were my sentimental fave. Too cool having them at the show all tall and grown up, having seen them in their original "wall of Reverb" Morpheus persona back in the early/mid90s at The Kilowatt in San Francisco when they were just small boys with little capes Wink

One soul in particular I missed this year was Baja Marty. I hope to see him return. Mr Dave Arnson, could we not have a better Surf EmCee with the joie de vivre to capture us all. For everyone who makes this an event for people to come hundreds, even thousands of miles for, I salute you all! Everyone is an "Ambassador of Surf". Everyone!

Congratulations and thanks again to SG101 founder Brian Neal, promo kings Whorehay RFB & Tiki Tena, JonPaul, equipment saviors The Quilters, Starting Gate Club and staff, door people, volunteers, merch maniacs, Legends, bands, fans, photographers, friends, the raffle-winning Mr J, EmCee Insect Dave Arnson and the guy with yet another year's Spirit of Surf Award under his belt - Big Tiki Dude!!!

I'm finally home and resting after the
History tour, kicking back with my feet up.
That being said I am going to see Lorenzo's new band Surfer Joe tonight.

I think I'm pretty accurate in saying this
Years show was a huge success and continuing to grow each year.
I thank you all for coming and for the kind
Words and support.
Keep the reviews coming.
They are making me happy,
And helping with the departure
Sadness of my new friends in The Bradipos IV.
Like Josh said, it was rough saying
Goodbye to them last night.
:-/

Thanks to all of the bands, loved all of you.
Helpers, Kristena, the Quilter Bros.
I think we have something amazing going here.

Thanks to Satan's Pilgrims,
I thought it was so Rad that they wanted
To come and Play The SG101 convention!!!

There is probably more to say, and thank,
But my mind is toast.

I am finally home and exhausted. I will write more later, but for now I just want to thank Jeff for another memory of a lifetime. Thanks also to everyone who helped Jeff out running the thing: Mike & Sandy, Marie, Matt Quilter, Kristena, Kristena's daughters, and the fine staff at the Starting Gate.

This indeed was an incredible experience. I live 1000 miles away but coming back to this for the 4th time now was like meeting old family & friends. I love all of you!

And oh yeah:

SATAN'S PILGRIMS!
