What ever happened to the Galaxy Trio?

Looking at their album covers i can't even tell which of them is Jim Crabbe. Ok, bands break up these things happen but to completely forget them is a tragedy. What's you opinion i'd like to know. They didn't like touring, mostly just played in Portland, Bellingham, and a couple of other PacNW shows. Jim Crabbe did say his mian influences were (at the time) Dick Dale and the Mermen, Phil Dirt calls them a fuzz band which i'm not sure is correct. Correct me if i'm wrong but isn't fuzz square wave? The nature of Jim's Style was open strings and sustain, the byproduct of sustain is distortion. For the most part they play fairly clean and although they were out there on the fringe i'd call them surf. Top

crumble Joined: Sep 09, 2008 Posts: 3158 Guildford England	Posted on Jan 27 2009 12:10 PM Please excuse, when i first got into surf music around 2006 the Galaxy Trio were one of the first bands i really dug along with the Surf Coasters and the Bambi Molesters. The trad side of things took me a while to get into. I bought all the G.T.'s CD & Singles used from separate sellers around the Scotland area uk(??) for peanuts. On a side note they always will be worthless items if there is zero information about the band. I always come back to the G.T. when i'm bored with everything else, I just wondered what they were like live, what road gear they used and stuff. It's crazy but Ted has made internet history just by saying a little about them! Top

Cal. show, that they did with the Insect Surfers, at Club Mesa in Costa Mesa, It was a wed or thurs nite, and I was tired, but I wanted to see them. as I had heard they were good, but didn't have any of their stuff. except for a few songs on comps. They Played a INstro Version of White Wedding by Billy Idol, and I was diggin that and their tunes. So I bought both cds and both 45s, and a t shirt. of course my luck , White Wedding wasn't on any of the releases. but I really got into them a lot, and tried to talk other people into getting their cds thru the bands web site. but nobody I told about them, liked them. their loss. sadly. — Jeff(bigtikidude) Top

As a long time GT fan and guitar player in a band that, among other styles, likes to play surf music, I was poking around on the interweb in hopes of finding out what the hell ever happened to those guys. They should still be playing somewhere, right? Anyway, I'm going to keep looking, but in the meantime my band, SmokeWagon, has been playing Fur Elise ala Galaxy Trio style at every show. The illustrious Jim Crabbe broke up the band in the late 90s and moved here to LA , where he joined the crew at the Rhino Records store (just store, not label itself) where I was working at the time. He admitted being fairly lackadaisackal (sp?) about documenting the band (much to my consternation!). Really nice guy, incidentally. He had shifted his interests to power-pop by that point and put out a 12" (on his own label,i think) of a few songs of that genre. They kinda reminded me of Tom Petty! Gone was his silvery surf tone, though...he got married,moved back up to Portland and had a kid.. he's still somewhere in Portland! His contributions to the instro genre are sorely missed !!! Top

Agreed 90s surf music is wonderfull, remember a while back Squonky1 uploaded a bunch of 90s footage ..The Tiki Tones playing Farenheit 451 just blew my brains out. I'm not sure their monaural recordings were as good as intended but no complaints anyways. I'd guess Elmo the drummer is Scott Galper? well, unless they grow talented drummers on trees around Portland! Very musical with his kit, following Jim's every grace note. I think he also played in a band called Black Jack which Jim helped with recording. I'm very interested in Jim Crabbe's playing style which is basically Mermen influence i'd say. Where as most guitarists avoid open notes, Jim made it a feature of his playing. He controls it so well, almost fluid orchestral sounding. They also have a couple of rare tracks: Misirnagila (Miserlou Hava Nagila) Various Artists album "Dickheads". A cracking cover of Jack the Ripper from V.A. Think Link Volume 2.
