I prefer a 3 piece. Only becuase I find it difficult to understand and be able to play with another guitar.

3 guitars, bass, drums => Satan's Pilgrims!!!

Yeah, those dudes are sick! I dont know how they do it.
It reminds me of my first band 'Rancid Death' : we all played guitar. So I was forced to play drums. (we didnt last that long)

i voted for 5 piece - I've got a 4 piece now, but IF I could find a 5th guy that played guitar, and a little sax, and possibly Rhodes organ, and sing well, that would be cool.

5 piece for me. Operating word here is _ 'ideal' _. In an ideal world, stages would be big, clubs would pay good money and free drinks and food. We would have plenty of time to hone our arrangements so as to make the most of all the players.

yeah, now that I think about it - _Ideally_, I'd like a seven or eight piece band, ala Dick Dale and the Del-tones - 2 or 3 horns, 3 guitars, organ/piano, bass, and drums. THAT would be cool!

You need to add to the poll: 5 piece and 3 gogo dancers. Groovy

We've played as a 3 piece, 4 piece, and 5 piece. The 5 piece is better.

I voted "four" - I dig the sound of 5-piece bands (outside surf too), but playing wise I prefer four - better for on-stage communication and "directing the band"... I played in a 5-piece and could never get to cue them all at the same time.

I get the 'ideal' hypthesis let's-tweak-all-variable-to-our-will idea, Danny, but in that 'ideal' band, I wouldn't be playing in it! Laughing

I voted for five; I think that would be an ideal size for a surf band, as others have already stated.

Also go-go dancers. Ideally, ones that look and move like the Pontani Sisters. That is rare, however.

But WR, in my ideal band you'd be one of the guitars. Now what am I supposed to do Confused

my fictional band is probably just way better then your fictional band! Very Happy
too bad they're both fictional.

in all seriousness. I would enjoy an extra Laura in the band, she's great at taking cues and following unexpected twists. but other people are less inclined to expect the unexpected. Confused

I'd be happy with just a 2nd guitarist at this point.

It'd be a blast to have a Del-tone style line up!

When I cast my vote I was thinking in the fantasy realm, also.
No volatile personalities, everyone shows up on time, sober and in uniform ready to work.

In reality,

I played the skins for a 6 piece jump blues combo for a few years.
Trying to get that group to adhere to the above list?
Holy chit, it was like cat wrangling.

Bill, have you been looking? I would expect the RA's to find one easily.

Finding young people to join a surf band is hard. I'm lucky I coaxed my friends into doing it. And then we were at Guitar Center and met our 5th member who was younger than us, maybe 19 at the time, and he joined maybe a year later.

I'm assuming the Aquanauts are looking for somebody their age.

I would imagine finding anyone of any age to join a surf band would be hard.

i took the term "ideal" to heart and voted "three-piece".

bass, drums, guitar....simple and effective...and it allows a lot of space (and responsibility) for each player...
