Permalink Tone King Continental or Galaxy Amp. Experiences for Surf?

New Topic

Hi,

I always have got the Tone King Amps in my head... About 10 years ago I played a Continental (40 watts) in a shop. The owner didn`t want to sell it...
I payed it just with little volume but I can remember this unforgettable nice creamy tone! The reverb and the Vibrato put showers on my skin.

I discovered that Tone King stopped the Continental amp production since years.
But there`s a new one called "Galaxy". Very nice and now with 60 watts.

The lead channel is for gain players... I guess this isnt the first choice for surf music? But maybe its loud and clean enough? Are there any players with experiences?
Is this amp worth the high high price???

I found some pics of the old Continental Amp. The old 2x12 cabinet is much nicer than the new one.

The original Tone King amps were killer Ralf, and damned right they work for Surf. The cabs had a great retro vibe. Can't speak for the newer ones.

Almost every review I've read compares it to a Bandmaster, so assuming all those reviews are correct, I can only image it would make a killer surf amp.
Plus it would look really awesome on any stage.

Hi Ralf,
you have good taste.
Those are great amplifier!
The Continental have 4 6V6 (I suppose a A class), so less wattage and more drive. These are really hard to find. Some years ago it was sold for about 3000 USD.
The Galaxy have 4 6L6 (I suppose a AB class), like most Fender amps, more wattage and a clean tone.

You must have the Continental! Or a custom Galaxy with those 6V6 ;)
Good rockin'

Does anyone know the price of the new Galaxy? With the matching cabinet?

Every word is like an unecessary stain on silence and nothingness.

There's 1 on Ebay for $3590.

Ralf,

There is a shop in Zagreb that sell both models. Last time I checked store owner offered me a discount (I think 2000 EUR for Galaxy). I can check if you are interested.

AAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!!!! What can I say...
I have got a new amp!
Ive found one here in Germany. Only 3 hours to drive and picked it up! Yeah! I have one of those rare old Continentals with the 4 x 6V6 and thousands of 12AX7As tubes inside!
Wow! Great sound! Loud and clean!! Very nice at all!
I made one first pic. The little stands are not on the pic but Ive got them with the amp: http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab215/surfer-666/Miscellaneous/CIMG0163.jpg The sound is (of course) different to Fender amps. It sounds very "american"... hard to tell it in words. I have to do a little sound catching video. I didnt played it with the complete band yet. At last playing together with the band will tell if it`s good or not!

...I am going to sell 3 or 4 guitars soon to finance this amp!

Twang cheers!

That is one handsome amplifier.

Nice score, Ralf! I'd love to hear some samples!

Congratulations of your new amp! Nice color, too! I prefer this option from the green one.

Guitars? Which guitars? Please let me know! Smile

How you you compare the Tone King Galaxy to the
Tone King Sky King? I have the Sky King and I came
across a Galaxy Head so is it worth selling the Sky
King and get the Galaxy Head? Then I would just have
one Amp. From what I've read the Galaxy is based off
the Fender Dual Showman.

Lou D

Congrats on the new amp. Tone King makes great amps.

I have an Imperial MKII. Super light. Those older models seem hard to come by.
