I was actually kinda impressed with some of the arranging he did on this.
and the fact that he didn't over do the weedley weedley thing.

I'm a little surprised at how much I really loved that!

its good because he didn't over do it, and ruin it,
I like Metal, but when you try to take surf into Metal territory 100%
it basically becomes corny metal.

But if you just heavy it up a bit,
I think it retains its surf vibe, and mixes with the metal.

after all, Dick Dale is the Godfather of Heavy Metal right?
wink wink?

As opposed to the Guitar God Heavy Metal?

That was pretty cool ! He also did a cover of The Wedge...

What I think of whenever I watch a metal guy do an arrangement/cover on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXjbz4TQOyM

Whatever, Jake. This guy really does seem to get it. I think he sounds fantastic, and isn't just going through the motions.

I don't think his sound is too far off from the modern D.D. sound.....

My favorite part is the comments section, where someone asks "where did you get the tabs for this song, i dont find it anywhere!" Like, you couldn't possibly learn these songs without tabs, or even play guitar without tabs.

Mostly, though, I'm just happy to finally see a monkey grip guitar play some surf!

Here's this guy's myspace with more tunes, including a surfed-up Terrapin Station http://www.myspace.com/baronmobiussurf

I also really enjoyed his hard-driving version of "Russian Roulette". Thumbs up! Oh, and he posted Richie Allen's Rising Surf on YouTube - he clearly loves this stuff.

I really like this guys take on the surf tunes he's covered. He plays with just enough trad sensibility to show he indeed gets its, while obviously putting a metal/whatever spin on it.

By the title of the thread, I was afraid to watch it, but was glad I did. Jake, seriously???????

Sometimes Jake likes Picking Fly shit out of Pepper.

You can't get a little bit pregnant.

This is coming from someone rapidly slip-sliding down a metalish slope and realizing that I can surf that slope.

It isn't bad or anything. It was just really precise. I felt he was playing section by section instead of just letting the song wash over him and come out of him naturally.

Great to see you Kristena! It's been a long time!

Totally, Jake. I just felt like it was a little out of left field. We all know everyone has a different style within the genre. I'm just as picky as the next person when I'm listening (Jeff can be my witness!), but I gave it a chance and was pleasantly surprised.

Check this one out.

Nice!

Made me check out his other uploads, one of which had an intro title saying he was/is the Surf Demons. Seems they have a Myspace page with this Bio:

We are three musicians who have played in the Bay Area metal scene for years, and decided to form a Surf band for numerous reasons, first being, Surf Music is awesome, and also it has been a true love of mine since an early age thanks to my own Father and also radio shows like Phil Dirt's 'Surf's Up' on KFJC(Los Altos Hills). We aim at keeping a high energetic, aggressive style, yet still true to the authentic style of 60's Surf with reverb drenched guitar and driving bass.

He's got an audio-only version of the Astronauts / Firewater and a cover of the Original Safari's / Bombora in their My Space player...
