The preceding are Original Surfaris originals. Bombora is, of course, not the Atlantics song of the same name.

Sort of like the Dave Myers version, and presumably one is modeled on the other.
Surf Angel
Instrumental cover of Earth Angel. Earth Angel was actually originally recorded by Ted Brinson, who was the recordist for the Original Surfaris sessions for Victor Regina and Tony Hilder, so I suspect there could be some connection here.

I always wondered at that. Why did they make that distinction? Was there another Surfaris that came along?

Yep. Complicated story. But two different bands. Lots of posts on this elsewhere on the Forum, The (Glendora) Surfaris are the Wipe Out! band (and lots of other good stuff). The (Anaheim) Original Surfaris are the Bombora band. Modulo that conflict with the other song Bombora by the Atlantics.

Back in the mid-90's you might remember a site called mp3.com. There was a track or two on there that was a collaboration with some dude and (Original) Surfaris lead guitarist Larry Weed. I sent an email to the dude but sadly never heard back. I always wondered what became of Larry.

Hey Brian, check your copy of Surfin' Guitars which has quite a lot of info on what happened to him up until 1996.

I wonder about them, too. I think Bob Dalley is in touch again with some of them. As I recall from some prospecting on FB, Al Valdez is still around and working as a keyboardist. They never really got their due, I think, and so much of it was just awkward chances, a lot of which is very inadequately explained.
I never knew about the mp3.com site connection. mp3.com search on Larry Weed at the moment leads strange places fast. Gourds Just Want to Have Fun?

There's more legend than light about this. I have not seen anything concrete about the "decision." Apparently the judge, the court, the date, and the text of the decision are none of them matters of record. I gather "court" was arbitration, rather than a trial. The judge who made the decision is supposed to have concluded that the Glendora Surfaris had the better right to the name because of their national hit, or really, probably, because Dot et al. had a vested commercial interest in a hit with that name, and (I think by then) the Glendora Surfaris had a recording contract with Decca, or the hope of one. He decided or allowed that the Anaheim Surfaris could call themselves the Original Surfaris because they had been a band for longer, which was clear. However, it is unclear whether they were actually calling themselves the Surfaris longer. As far as I can figure it out, they were maybe still calling themselves the Customs when the Glendora band was formed. The whole thing is surprisingly complicated and remarkably ill-documented. Pretty much what you'd expect a bunch of shyster music promoters to come up with, aided and abetted by teenaged boys. Neither group is remarkable for accurate record keeping or a desire to have all their doings subjected to close scrutiny.

Further confusing the Surfaris/Original Surfaris name controversy is the fact that some of the budget labels that put out Original Surfaris material referred to the group simply as The Surfaris. These 99 cent albums included both Guest Star and Almor.
