It occurred to me the other day that I know absolutely nothing about the history of the surf/instro scene in Japan. It seems that most "History of Surf" articles focus on Southern California and a few other bands from around the country until the end of the 60s. I'm working on a big ol' writeup on surf for another music forum and when I got to Japan everything I know could be summed up as:
The Ventures go to Japan
Takeshi Terauchi / Yuzo Kayama
EMBARRASSING 30 YEAR KNOWLEDGE GAP
The Surf Coasters
Does anyone have any good resources for Japanese surf/eleki/instro/whatever history or just know of any Japanese bands from the 60s onwards that I could look into? Again, people focus on the US side of things and I want to learn more about surf history from around the world.

I actually remember seeing this thread and completely forgot about it, how embarrassing. Thanks!

Traditional surf bands from Japan - Jackie & the Cedrics, The Windows, The Sellcancers and The El Caminos were/are the best, IMO. The Whys, Rat Holic and Blue Horizon are both pretty good, too. (By traditional I mean not Eleki influenced ... or not that Eleki influenced.)
Then there's the heavily Eleki/GS influenced stuff - The Royal Fingers, Wild Sammy & the Royaltones, Goggle-A
For more garagey instro bands - Mad 3, Howling Guitar, Switch Trout, Mach Kung Fu
— That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Apologies, Brian, for not carrying over to the pre-eixsting thread!
I don't recall seeing "bIG wAvE Dave" post here lately, but he did recently share a great video of Japanese surf over on Crackbook; BCV & Kohei - doing Surf Party.
...now doing a search for BCV & Kohei here, it seems Noah / Kill, Baby... Kill also found some footage from some of the fellers not so long ago formative years.

Totally off topic, but this video cracks me up. Mel Waldorf, Johnny Hamilton and I came up with "The Typewriter" dance move for Surf Party in 2001. I taught it to The Surf Coasters when I played the song with them, and here's another Japanese band doing them. Too funny!

"The Typewriter" ... I love it! Totally the visual.
My first reaction was it was a song appropriate take on the Shads and their choreographed turns and shuffle steps (Exhibit A), but now that you say Typewriter...
Awesome.

Ferenc, that's really awesome! Just more evidence of you being a true trendsetter!

Of course, most anybody under 25 will have NO CLUE why you named that move 'the typewriter'. (Is it still being a trendsetter when you're inspired by obsolete technology??)

Awesome, I've heard of a few of these but didn't know they were from Japan. This is a nice list, thanks.
