can anyone recommend a digital recorder

I'm looking for an inexpensive digital recorder to record back tracks, jam sessions or ideas. About 20 years ago I had the Tascam multi-track/mixer Cassette version which I loved. Any help is greatly appreciated.

There are lots of digital 4-tracks out now. For guitarists, I highly recommend the original BOSS MicroBR. This is one toy I have used A LOT!

They apparently have come out with a new model based upon this one, though if it is like the original, it is probably great.

I have the Zoom H4, now available in the H4n version. It's very practical and easy to use. It features 2 in-built mics, 2 xlr/jacks inputs, 4 tracks recording mode, lots of effects...

I use it to record rehearsals as well as home studio stuffs. You can plug it on the computer and use it as a soundcard (came bundled with Cubase LE).

I've been using a Korg d1200 for the past 5 years or so. It can record up to 4 channels at a time, and you can go back and record alternate tracks on each channel (up to 9 or 10, something like that). You can also mix and then burn to a CD. It works great as a home studio and also does a good job recording live, all of our demos were made using it to record live shows with 4 mics. Apparently they go for as little as a couple hundred $$ now.

I have the Tascam DP-004 and I think it's perfect for what you're talking about. It's great for grabbing a quick recording of an idea, but where it really shines is songwriting - Being able to record, play over and build tunes has made it an indispensable tool for me.

just won off ebay micro boss br for $76. Far cry from the store price of $199. Can't wait to try it out and maybe make some back tracks. I use to have the Tascam 4 track cassette from the 1970-80's. Still have it, but doesn't work.

The D1600 (mki and ii) is probably just about the same price on ebay. It's worth it for the extra 4 input channels.

Thru the years I've found that cassette recorders can "vary in speed". There are a myriad of reasons for this, but they're still great. Moving right along: Check into a ZOOM R-16. I've been "getting accustomed" to mine....but, it does a whole lot of things for a pretty decent price ! Check em' out @ www.samsontech.com/zoom/products/multi-track-recorders/r16/ (Hint: If ya' decide to get one...check out the various "bundle offers" from an American Music Supply catalog & take the "ad" in w/you when you visit the music store......unbelievable discount !!).

I have been recording live events for many years, with lots of different media. I was given a demo of the new Roland R-26, hands down the best recordings I have ever made from onboard mics / mic pres. Best unique feature, aside from onboard six individual tracks, is the mic combonations, five presets, and a manual M/S like feature to contour the stereo width. A little more $$$, but really cool.

I have the Zoom H4n too, very happy with it, I use for band rehearsal (lucky we are 3 piece).
I place the on-board stereo mic over the drums (gives excellent stereo recording) bass is D.I. into the 3rd channel, mic the guitar amp into 4th channel. Once recorded, quick mix on Cubase, final mix sounds pretty good, quick and easy set-up too.
