Just started prowling these forums again thanks to Onslow_Beach and I'm so glad I did. There's so much good spirit and good information here it's really inspiring! I just got the following from CDBABY and can't wait to review:
The Madeira - Carpe Nocturne (Surf Fidelis is striking and the subtle progression change is just awesome, can't stop listening to the MP3)
The Tomorrowmen - It's about Time!
Los Twang Marvels - Prueba De Fuego

Thank you all for turning me on to this great new music!

ALSO - what does everyone think of grooveshark.comand should it be promoted or avoided?

Hi, aqualadius! I gather you're from the Aqualads? If so, which one are you?

I've been listening to Treasures a LOT lately - a phenomenal CD! Love it! Congratulations on such a good album.

Definitely - though judging by the CD, it doesn't sound like you need much more inspiration. ;)

Well, thank you VERY much! Greatly appreciate it. I shared ýour comments with the band, and they all thank you as well.

The Tomorrowmen - It's about Time!
Los Twang Marvels - Prueba De Fuego

Also make sure to get Los Twang Marvels Jungle of Twang. And while you're at it, I'd recommend checking out the following few, as well:

The Barbwires: Searider CD
Frankie & the Pool Boys CD
El Supernaut: Viva! Viva!
El Ray: Chasing Ray
The Bambi Molesters: As the Dark Wave Swells

There are many more great recent surf CDs out there (the Secret Samurai and the Thunderchiefs also come to mind) but these should do you for now. Smile

Thank you all for turning me on to this great new music!

There's TONS more - hope you stick around! And thank YOU for the great music!

Hey Ivan I'm Jeremy. I never did get to play with the Space Cossacks back in 96'or '97, as when the Aqualads first formed the bassplayer for the first 2 months was a guy named Jake Berger. I started shortly after they met you guys. However I have always been a huge Space Cossacks fan, and am now apparently a Madeiras fan as well!

Thank you so much for the compliments on the new album. I started out playing bass with the aqualads but have since graduated to guitar and Atlanticus was my own creation and ended up being all me on guitar for that song on the album. So double thanks!

I have really started to appreciate modern surf so much more since I've started listening to all of these new bands in the past few weeks. I think back in the late 90's we were always so focused on the traditional angle, and the historical importance of the music. But in my opinion after hearing all of these new bands, I think the surf music of today has transcended the original genre while still tastefully holding it in high esteem. I'm really excited about the direction the genre is going in.

Thanks so much for the recommendations. I am slowly building my modern collection! I am currently enjoying listening to the SG101 MP3 compilations. I just love this place!

Thanks again Ivan!

Hello Jeremy! Welcome, and nice to meet you.

Ah, I see. Yeah, that was back in the summer of '97, the ill-fated Surfari USA tour! I was sick as a dog that whole tour - you haven't lived until you've toured for two-weeks straight (five people and all the gear in a crappy mini-van) through the South in the middle of the summer, playing until 2-3 am every night, while having a bad flu and running a high fever! That was.... memorable. I'm surprised I didn't die from pneumonia, loading and unloading the gear into the air-conditioned clubs with the temp in the 60s, then stepping out into 100F - what a way to treat a flu! Anyway, Blah Blah You guys sound like a very different band on Treasures than the one I remember hearing in the summer of '97 - though my memory is not to be trusted due to my condition at the time (or just in general Smile ). I guess you actually are quite a different band, with you in the band and on lead now, as well as a different drummer.

However I have always been a huge Space Cossacks fan, and am now apparently a Madeiras fan as well!

Well, thank you very kindly!

Thank you so much for the compliments on the new album.

You're very welcome. You played all the guitars on Atlanticus, including the fast rhythm? Very nice! I continue to love this album! The three-song stretch of Washout/Atlanticus/Viento Del Sur is just incredible. Wow. (Do I hear a bit of the influence of the Fathoms on Washout?) And what the heck time signature is Viento Del Sur in, anyway?? 7/8? It's very cool! (The Whirling Dervish is pretty incredible, too, some major double-picking going on there!)

I have really started to appreciate modern surf so much
more since I've started listening to all of these new

Jeremy, I think this is extremely well put, and I agree with you 100%. I love, LOVE '60s surf, but I love the modern surf just as much, and find it as exciting and creative as it's ever been. I love that there are bands that are willing to put their own stamp and aren't afraid to show their own personality through both songwriting and playing, but still be extremely well grounded in the tradition. On top of that, there's so much creativity in this tiny little genre of ours, it's just astounding. Considering how few bands there are (at least relatively speaking, compared to most other genres), it's incredible that we keep getting so many great new releases, and of such variety. I just love it.

(BTW, check out The Continental Magazine for some cool interviews with modern surf artists, etc.: http://www.doublecrownrecords.com/continental-magazine/ )

Very glad to hear it! It is THEE place for surf music lovers, as you've already found out. Lots of very supportive people on here, too.

Thanks again Ivan!

You're very welcome! Hope you continue to enjoy all the new surf albums you're getting! And best of luck with the Aqualads, very much hope we can get you to Indianapolis sometime.

If I may jump in on yer discussion here?
I totally agree and have been thinking about this a lot lately.
This IS what the SG101 convention is ALL about.
Sure we have a 1 hour tip of the hat to the 60's legends,
either in tribute, or them actually playing on stage.
But It to me is about the Modern scene, and all of the different sub-styles of surf from around the country-and world.

I really liked the old Aqualads, and the 3rd one really jumped out at me as a departure(in a good way), and from the few clips I have heard of the new album, I am really looking forward to getting it.

And am even interested in Having you guys come out to So. Cal. if you would like, and maybe even a West Coast tour, and a Spot at the SG101 convention,
either next year or after(when/or if you guys can and or want to)
Send me a e-mail at Bigtikidude@yahoo if you would like to discuss more off-forum.

Congrats on the new album, and hope to hear more great things from you guys in the future.

That sounds great I will definitely be in touch. I'm so disappointed I can't make it out this year. I have to go to a wedding, but at least the alads are playing that wedding so that makes it scant better. I wish someone could drag a web-enabled video cam around with them so I could live it vicariously!!! I'm definitely attending next year with a good extra week for all of the surrounding venue gigs going on. Congrats to all of you for fostering such a thriving international scene!

Jeremy,
Thanks for all the great info on the "Treasures" CD by the Aqualads. I can't put mine down! Reef Rider to Snake Eyes to Phantom Point does it for me. I love the varying surf styles of these opening tunes. Great tone and the bass/lead interplay. When I saw you guys at the instro Summit I was completely blown away! Thanks for the great new music.

In regards to the traditional vs. modern, I agree with what some others have already said; I really appreciate and enjoy listening to the traditional music, but the modern and new stuff is what gets me jacked up to write music and play out.

Enjoy your 4th!

Why can't there be more songs like this? One of the great live takes, in my opinion(brilliant mix). The counterpoint of the ondes and e-bow are on another level playing off a brilliant bassline with Thom Yorke adding the perfect level of tension.

It's About Time!, by The Tomorrowmen. It just came. I just started listening. I'm sort of speechless, so, I'll just say, yeah, what Ivan said.

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

a bunch of different versions of 'caravan' on youtube. one of the best for me was les paul and chet atkins together.
