Ditto.

Jamie, IMO one of the problems with the Vibroverb reissue tone-wise (for surf/instro rock) is the crappy speakers and tubes that came in them. That amp in its stock form seems to be voiced for blues music. I bought a new one back in 1996 and kept it two days before returning it to the store. It was SOOOO dark-sounding. Had I known what I know now, I'd have done a tube and speaker swap and would probably still have it.

Anyway, if you insert a pair of good ceramic 10's of your choice and some quality tubes I think you'll be pleased and surprised at the results. Big Grin Big Grin

To try to jack this thread in another direction, has anybody tried or had any first-hand experience with the Vibrolux Reverb Reissues with the Mark Moyer mods? According to some other people who spend their time on guitar forums on the internet, you can convert a Vibrolux reissue to a Vibroverb reissue by way of these for minimal money spent in parts.

Just my opinion here: the vibrolux reverb RIs are not so great. Noisy. Certainly not much like the originals. You can mod them and get improvements; I'd start somewhere else. The VV RI 2x10 is one of the better reissues fender put out. Assuming you upgrade tubes and speakers. Really nice sound.

I've plugged into the 1x15 VV originals and reissues (being addicted to 15" speaker combos in general). Nice amps, but give me a brownface Fender Pro anyday. Some heavy tone right there.
MD

The '63 Vibroverb Ri had a ss rectifier..fine for surf but not to good (no sag) for blues.
Cabinet construction was ok..not great
The Oxford speakers are very muddy...replace those and get a good set of tubes and it's a good amp. Many of the ones you see out there will need to have the grill cloth replaced..for some reason it did not hold up very well.

Woody:

That is sweet! Great condition. Just grabbed one myself. Cosmetically "experienced", but damn, what a sound.

I had a friend who had a 63 reissue, lent to a buddy and was smoked. He brought to me to see what could be done, I suggested we put a real 6G16 circuit in it, and here are some pics of the results. We replaced the Oxford reissues with one Weber Ceramic 10" and one!Weber Alnico 10". Has a great sound, not to sure if it works for Surf, sure does Blues well.

@ lux tone amps: so the only difference between this restoration and the 63' original is the ajustable bias?

Yes we put one in so we could try some different power tubes.
