I'm a 45 year old musician with over 30 years playing experience. Made my living playing blues guitar throughout most of the 90's. I play guitar, non-pedal steel, bass (including upright), keys, percussion, and a variety of other instruments. I also write and sing.
Seeking other like-minded individuals to form a surf/instrumental/exotica/retro-jazz/cocktail band in North Alabama (Huntsville, Decatur, The Shoals). Looking to do a mostly instrumental mix of originals and covers, along with a few vocal numbers in the style of APE, Blue Hawaiians, Martini Kings, etc. I'm a pretty decent crooner, too.
I own lots of vintage-style gear including color-matched sets of guitars and bass to look cool onstage. I'm very much into a band having a retro, visually-coordinated look like most bands from the first wave days of surf.
My day job is in graphic arts, so promotional materials, CD packaging, posters, etc. are no problem. I also do video production and have several venue connections for gigs.
Not looking to play out a lot, just maybe one or two gigs a month for fun, put out a CD or two, and occasionally travel to festivals.

Where were all of the surf/instro bands when I lived in Dullsville, I mean, Huntsville back during '90-'92? I do remember seeing the Woggles and Hillbilly Frankenstein way back then. No surf, though.

I moved to Decatur in 2000 and didn't know much of the Huntsville music scene before that. But I got involved with a great venue called The Flying Monkey Arts Center and it was there I discovered the local surf scene with bands like The Penetrators, Daikaiju, and The Rocket Scientists. I formed the North Alabama Surf Alliance to try to help promote the surf scene further in the area, but not much has happened outside those few bands. I'd still like to put on a major surf festival in Huntsville, which Santanu (of Daikaiju) and I have talked about for years now. We'd once even set a date, but his band had to pull out because of scheduling conflicts and the whole thing just kinda fell apart without them. Maybe someday we'll try again.

Matt,
I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Noah and I play with the band Kill, Baby...Kill! out of Anniston/Talladega, Alabama. I don't know if I can help you out in regard to members from your area. Frankly, it took me the better part of five years to solidify the lineup I currently have. However, you are in a state with a great legacy of modern surf/instro. Daikaiju, Penetrators, Man or Astro-man?, Original Snake Charmers, The Hi-fidelics, Jonny and the Shamen, Piss Shivers, Kill, Baby...Kill!, The 3Ds and quite a few others have existed or still exist from the past two decades.
Please keep in touch with me to keep me up to date on what you have going. Santanu and I have also discussed the surf fest thing and I believe that between Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee alone it could be pulled off. Don't even get me started on what all is going on in the Carolinas. We played the Instro Summit back on May 1st in Chapel Hill and I was blown away at how many bands they have from that area.
Regards,
Noah

Well, I suppose they are technically from 'Space'. They formed in Auburn, AL back in 1992 but moved to Atlanta/Athens, GA two or three years later. Brian T, the drummer, currently resides in his home town of Birmingham and is heavily involved with booking for his fiance's club, The Bottletree. Brian C, the guitarist, is still in Athens, GA. Rob D, bass, resides in Atlanta, GA and their current rhythm player, Johnny, lives in Canada.
We will certainly keep in touch. If you are on facebook, search Noah Holt and add me.
