I OD'd, but it was a great time!

It was cool to see familiar faces and also hear new bands. Aloha Screwdriver brought the pain but good, and I really dug Trivalve. (Sweep picking! Holy crap!)

I had a whole array of frustrating technical issues during the Deadbeats set. That was our first time playing together in over a month (six weeks even??) so it was a little dicey but still a fun time... and plus we won the battle anyways since I declared victory Cool Seemed like the crowd dug it too.

The Tomorrowmen set was a ton of fun too. I think I was more loosened up and less on edge so I had a blast. I think we played our first song at a million bpm. It was intense.

Thanks to everyone who tuned in! It was a grand ol' time!

Thanks to KFJC for providing the video feed for us poor dopes who couldn't make it in person.

The Deadbeats were awesome!

"It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea

Wow, what an unbelievably great show! Incredible that they wedged 16 performances like that into 4.5 hours! So many delightful bands playing such terrific selections.

I counted two saxophones.

Thanks for having us up. We (actually I) was pretty loose and sloppy, but had such a great time! Everybody I heard was amazing! Well done Ferenc!

That's weird Tom,
I thought you guys sounded really good.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Twas a surf-overload and I shanked one of the Deadbeats in the parking lot.
It was good to see a bunch of familiar faces...including one of my all time favorite drummers filling in for the Neptunes. Scott Abels used to play in some of my favorite bands the Aggrolites and Hepcat, so it was a shock to see him at a surf gig!

Ben: I had my electronic metronome set to 1 million BPM just like we previously discussed.

Ferenc: Congrats on another successful surf battle!

Science friction burns my fingers.

Jeff, thanks! It was silly stuff that I should never fumble on, but the I was happy with the improv stuff... Tony, Scott was stoked to be recognized. He is amazing to play with. I was giddy to have him pounding away behind us!

The Neptunes were amazing - if that was "loose and sloppy", I'm not sure I could take it if you were better. Definitely one of the buzz bands on Saturday...

We the Deadlies (The other un-alive band) had a blast as well!!!

Thanks Ferenc and Cousin Mary and KFJC!!!

The Deadlies looked great up there! It was nice to hear less "surfy" tunes thrown into the mix!

Another great Surf Battle and a great response for KFJC. I was a happy fan this year. Thanks again to Ferenc, Cousin Mary, Phil Dirt and the KFJC staff. Menlo Park being close to Home territory for me and it was great to see the extended family of Bay Area Surf all together in a larger venue - wow SRO! All the bands were up for the challenge and were enjoyed by all. IMHO, several bands exceeded my expectations (e.g. Aloha Screwdriver [think Man or AstroMan? meets The Infrareds], The Neptunes [Django meets reverb]), others were significantly improved (e.g. Trivalve, The Lava Rats). The Berzerkers and The Eldorados were sentimental favorites. The Wander-Ins with REAL Surfers playing real Surf music. The Del Mars added trad sax appeal. The Reefriders proudly touting a new album. The Deadlies sporting Link Wray's power. The Mighty Surf Lords treking in from Reno assisted by Reefrider Glen. The Deadbeats adding that twinge of Latin rhythm and flavor. Frankie & The Pool Boys, The Tomorrowmen and Meshuggah Beach Party, aka The Danny Snyder Identity Restoration Project. And the kingpins, Pollo Del Mar, whose artistic creativity continue to amaze. As anyone there would say, "When do we do this again?"

See you all next year, and if I have an active band at the time, I promise to participate.

Right, Tuck. Their version of "Go!" is quite good.

The Lava Rats - Blowtorch

The Trivalve set from Leslie Bialik:

Sweepy Time, Rocke & Loade, Black and Tan Fantasy

I spotted this in a Facebook post. I have video of this video being made ...

I think they only did Go! live at the show, but the CD also includes Surfer's Deal!

This is the initial set of videos I posted of the KFCJ 2011 event. I had absentmindedly created a separate videos thread. At some point I noticed that thing with one foot on the dock (the original thread) and one foot on the boat (the new thread) and realized I had goofed. This is the fix: all of the videos in this post, and all of the interleaved separate comments in the next. Brian has gracious deleted the original thread. My apologies to everyone for the glitch.

One of my later posts is actually above this point, and there are now some posts of videos by others turning up, too.

Eldorados - Driving Guitars
Eldorados - Harlem Nocturne
Eldorados - Wicked Game

In the process of trying to remind myself of the title of Driving Guitars I realized that the Chantays' Banzai bears a close resemblance to Driving Guitars.

Eldorados - Twilight City

Based on the Bitch Boys' cover of the Vulcanes.

Three of the Eldorados are now Agency EL84
(https://www.facebook.com/pages/Agency-EL84/169741423049210).

The Deadlies - Baja
The Deadlies - The Rumble
The Deadlies - Pig Farm

The Deadlies are the Deadly (or potentially harmful) Surfinatics, edited down to a size that fits promotional literature conveniently.

Nice job on those.

Really like that arrangement of Harlem Nocturne.

What a weird stage!! At least from that camera angle. I
thought it was relocated to a bigger venue with a lot
more room. Looks kinda cramped but i wasn't there
so....The Eldorados sound great!!

PolloGuitar wrote:

The "stage" was the weakest part of moving the show to
the BBC from the Utah. It was just a dining area,
blocked by a solid railing. However, most people had a
good view, unless you were sitting on floor level.
Great videos Tuck, please keep 'em coming.

At which point I responded:

I may have rather beaten the Eldorados to death because they've always been a favorite of mine since I ran into them on MySpace looking for covers of Banzai Pipeline. But there's definitely more. It won't be a complete list. Some stuff didn't turn out as well for various reasons and I missed a few beginnings chatting. I missed all of the Neptunes' Jack the Ripper when I finished a tape at an awkward point. However, it is my intention to put up at least something by everyone.

The stage was much better than it looks, really, but I was mostly at floor level lower than the stage, which, as Ferenc correctly observes, was not optimal. My angle was partly blocked by the doorway and the view was occasionally blocked by the feeding frenzy of photographers or by the steady stream of patrons coming in by the door on the left. I should have used a monopod to raise the camera, but I couldn't stretch the baggage to include even a monopod, and I am not very fond of monopods anyway.

There was a guy I took to be the station's designated pro on the stairway landing who must have had the best angle and I saw a couple of other people videoing things from time to time. I may have been the only amateur in continuous operation, which was a bit surprising.

Thank you for putting on a really great show, Ferenc. Everywhere I looked I saw signs of careful thought and organization. It was a really beautiful program, too.
