I recently found a good deal on 64 blonde tremolux head. I plan on getting a fender reverb unit to go with it, but I don't know what a good cab would be. Up until now I've had a crappy solid state unit and this will be my first nice amp, so I'm new to the vintage market. My budget is about $300 right now. I'm fine with a non-matching cab as long as it gives me a good sound. Any recommendations?

Congrats. How much were you able to score the Tremolux for? I bet if you do some research online you can find the specs of the cabs they were originally sold with and base your search on that. I have always been curious about Tremolux's, so please post your impressions, clips, pics, whatever you feel like. —The Mystery Men? |

Here's an auction for a 2x12 fender tube speaker cab with unknown origins. Possibly from a twin or deluxe reverb. I could replace the speakers. Does this sound like a decent deal? |

The Fender Tremolux was essentially a piggy-back version of the Fender Vibrolux, and as such had two ten inch speakers, probably 8 ohm Oxfords in our case, wired in parallel for a 4 ohm load. I say "our," as I have one too... The correct size cabinet is slightly smaller than the Bandmaster of the same era. My cab is a Vibroworld-repro, with a single 12 inch speaker. There are several manufacturers who can do a repro for you, though Vibroworld is no longer doing that work I do not think... Of course, almost any cab will work, an 8 ohm speaker load is fine, but you will get the best out of your amp with a 4 ohm load. If you're not looking to stay vintage-spec, I'd look into an unloaded Avatar cabinet. Or, if you like 12" speakers, you could do a lot worse than the blonde/oxblood Fender Tone Master cabinets. I had one paired with a Silverface Bassman and it was one of the most authoritative experiences of my life! — |

I'm with Jake and Dannylectro. The original Tremolux Cab would have been a closed-back 2 X 10 in parallel for a 4 ohm load matching the 4 ohm output transformer. I'd stay with a 2 X 10, 2 X 12; or if you can find one; a good 4 ohm 12" speaker. The 15" JBL is overkill for an innefficient, low wattage amp like the Tremolux. They are great sounding amps. My friend has a 10" tone ring tremolux cab. Very very rare I understand. It sounds awesome. Spray painted black when he got it, naturally. |

I've been using a Fender DRRI (22 watts) to power up a Showman 1x15 cab and it sounds awesome! You do have to dial up the volume some to get it to shine though. That said my favorite rig is a Fender Vibroverb 2/10s (Webers). — |

I have added an image of my Tremolux and proper-sized VibroWorld repro cab to my post above, so that the OP can see what the size is supposed to be...this was before I added the threaded inserts to the cab so that I could tilt the whole thing back... One will note that the head has gold grill cloth and the cab has wheat...gold is extremely hard to come by, but a year ago I scored enough at the Orlando Guitar Show to do the cab...still waiting to get to it, sadly. —Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most... |

Interestingly, I stumbled upon this while mindlessly wandering through Ted Webers' boards: http://www.tedsforums.com/forum/index.php?topic=5964.0 (Brian, I am sorry if I have violated some rule about posting other boards, but it seemed timely enough...) As to speakers, old Oxfords, Jensens, maybe even Utahs would be appropriate. The amp does 30-35 watts RMS at 4 ohms, depending on the source you read...basically the Vibrolux/Pro/Bandmaster topology with reduced voltages to give you lesser output (I know, I am taking license here, but give me a break)...I like Weber's Signature Series a lot and they are not too much money. (Italian)Jensen MODS also might be good. Eminence has something I am sure but not familiar enough with their line...a "Legend" perhaps? —Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most...
