Not sure, but the provenance seems sound enough. I don't think Link used that guitar for very long anyway, as he's pictured with many different guitars all through the early sixties.

The guitar, regardless of ownership, is worth several hundred more than that. They've really raised in price the past decade/half-decade.

The Rhythm Tone has two pickups, one at the neck and one silver sound pickup under the bridge.

The Belmont has one pickup, in the neck. This goes for the pre-1960 models.

Auction over, reserve not met at $1725. I'd hate to see this end up at the Hard Rock Crape' or RnR Hall of Shame...

Yes I'm aware of that, but one of the pick ups on

rhythm tone is some sort of pre-piezo "acoustic"
type
under the bridge, which doesn't really sound very

- so I tend to forget about it. Regardless it's a
unique guitar

It's kind of wierd. There is no tone control. There are three volume knobs and a three position switch. The middle position seems to be both pick ups. If you turn the neck pick up knob it adds more bass in this position, the middle knob just turns both off. The under the bridge pick up sounds very jangly and acousticy, and only sounds good at low volumes. The neck pick up sounds really muddy. Both together sound good though. I always forget about the bridge pick up, since you can't see it and it doesn't sound that good on it's own. I've never looked inside. Maybe it could use a pick up rewind or some othe work.

It does say in the auction that he recorded Rumble on a Les Paul.

Hi, I am ZZeon from eBay with Link's Supro
One day I heard about a private auction for Link's guitar, and won it at auction. The guitar I offered topped out at about 1900 dollars, and did not sell.

The story as I know it. I bought it from John Van Horn, who was with Link during the sixties, until he got fed up with the music business and decided to return to "the farm". He obviously did not quit and continued playing until his death. There is a story that he threw his guitar at Milt the Manager, and some quotes stated in press, can you believe someone would treat their guitar that way - they were unaware of what the Who, Cobain and others could/would do in concert.

As a kid taking lesons, I heard of a guy that poked holes in his amp to get a certain kind of sound and I wrote it off as urban legend. Later I discovered Rumble and bought a Supro Dual Tone like Link's. I sold that one to a guy in Germany, after running into the private auction. I later dicoved that Link was also the father of the bar chord. I think that ban that affected Detroit, Boston, and LA was broader and Link was blacklisted in the music business amoung record companies, executives, and radio broadcasting. Certain film producers have chosen his music for their films, and these are part of a very savvy group.

Milt and Link argue in either the studio or at rehersal, and Link throws the guitar at him, what it hit - who knows, but very effective puntuation, at which Link stated he was going back to the farm.

John Van Horn Sr. picks the guitar up off the floor, and has it professionally repaired. Link used a Les Paul on Rumble, but ordered two guitars from Sears. He bought lighter guitars to ease the strain on an old war injury. The Supro and a Danelectro that was recently in DC at the Smithsonian for an Indian Nation music presentation. I think John thought he would have the guitar professionally repaired and give it to Link, but it sat in the attic longer than John Jr. can remember.

John was diagnosed with cancer and Mick Fleetwood suggested he produce an album. Anton Fig plays on it and John Sr. often played at Mick's club in DC, was accompanied by Mick and Anton at times. The CD was named "I've Got the Cure" and John Sr. passed on after it's completion. It contained Rumble, and John is shown on the cover holding the Supro, like the Wray PR photo on Link's disc.

John Jr. then held an auction for his fathers guitar and the Supro Dual Tone. While Jr. was younger, Link stayed with the Van Horn family for about a year and taught John Jr. his style and works. i have pictures of John Sr. and Link wearing the same sunglasses, playing video games together and some shots at shows near DC. Some with John Jr.

Anyway, there was a Link Wray tribute near the R&R Hall of Fame, I think at the Hard Rock in Cleveland, and Jr's band performed a Link Wray set. There were about 8 bands from what I remember.

...and that's the rest of the story!

May Link smell the sweetgrass forevermore, and John and Link play together in their Ray Men band in the sky.
