Permalink Slaughter on 10th ave Tab?

New Topic

Im having a hard time figuring this song out by ear and I cant find any sheet or/tabs for it out there. Any help would be appreciated...It doesnt matter what version but my fav is the Ventures '65 Live Japan one.

Also, who wrote this song? Is it The Shadows? The MC from the Ventures show says something about the Roaring 20's? Is it a jazz song?

hey va.bch.---i've got all of it but am out of town until monday. if you don't get it by then i'll get it to you. carol

I suggest you try this book by Fred Sokolow - "CLassic Rock Instrumentals". It has a transcription of the Ventures studio version of Slaughter On 10th Ave. pretty much note for note. Also has a lot of other great instrumentals. He does a really nice job of transcribing IMO, plus gives some interesting background on each song. I highly recommend it!

I can't help you with the tab, but maybe with the other stuff. The Ventures recorded this song several years before the Shadows (who recorded it in '69). The songwriting credits are given as Richard Rodgers (of the Rodgers-Hart and Rodgers-Hammerstein fame) who has done a lot of famous musicals, etc. It appears that the song originally comes from a '36 ballet (and a '39 movie) "On Your Toes". It was also used in a '57 movie by the title "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue" (a gritty film-noir drama based on a the true story that was also explored in "On The Waterfront" three years before). Thanks fo the info!
I ordered the book, sp hopefully ill be able to learn this song in a few days. It figures this song was 'composed' for it does have some weird changes in it that I wouldnt never be able to write...Its one of my all time fav songs-EVER.

Here are the chords, slightly simplified, that we use for our version of this song. I believe they follow the studio arrangement that the Ventures use. The chord progression is basically the same throughout the song but modulates thru several different keys. Never heard the Shadows version, will have to look for that. I think you will be pleased with the Sokolow book, its by far the most accurate and detailed transcription of guitar instrumentals I have seen. Casey

Wow, apparently Mick Ronson (David Bowie guitarist) covered this song...Now that Id like to hear.

The title of this song doesn't really fit the music. Maybe tip-toe on 10th Ave? By the way, Ryan Adams has a song called Shakedown on 9th Street which makes me think he got the idea of the song from Slaughter on 1th.

Kinda unrelated but The Ventures song Lullabye of the Leaves is a cover of a Broadway song also. amybe that's why I don't like those 2 songs.,
don't sound at all surfy to me. Sorry Ventures Fans.... Wink

I scored a Japanese tab book of Ventures songs off eBay a month or so ago, and it's great. Very in-depth transcriptions. This one has a slightly different cover, but the same songs (including "Slaughter on 10th Ave.")

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Ok I got the Tab book, learned how to play the studio version, then figured out how to play the Live Japan 65 version save for the 'solo' (where the saxaphone part would be) anyone good at figuring this 1 part out would be great! (in this vid its the part when the spot lite shines on Nokie)
I ordered the CD, but it hasnt arrived yet...and trying to figure it out by this vid aint working...

Coincidentally, the 'solo' on the studio version is a sax played through lesle speakers.
