Is there a topic about how to post photos on this new website? I tried but all I could accomplish was posting a link to my photobucket account photo.

Yes there are. But I'll sticky this one so it becomes the authoritative version. The easiest way to post a photo is to get the URL to the photo, then click the little picture icon above the box where you type your post. A pop-up will prompt you for that URL. Just paste in the URL. You can use the green check mark to preview. Another quick way to get that pop-up that prompts your for the photo URL is to type control-p. This works in most browsers. So, a workflow might look like this:
What may be tripping you up is knowing what URL you should use. You want the "raw" URL to the photo. Some of the photo sites helpfully try to include BBCode or HTML markup. You just want the link to the photo, which is usually something like this:
If you see any <img> or [img] crap, that isn't what you want. Please note that SG101 ditched the old formatting (BBCode) and went with a newer, easier to use (IMHO) markup called Markdown. To get detailed help on the new markup, click the little question mark help icon next to the "Submit Reply" button to get a cheat sheet. Hope this helps. PS. Please don't post humongous photos to the forums. If you can't resize them, just post a link to the photo instead. I finally figured out a workaround. I use Image Shack. My first attempt to post a picture looked like the code below. With a little creative editing, I get it done like this: From Image Shack: I then delete all but this part: Now, add parenthesis and type ![image] in front: (http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/2705/wailonthebeach.jpg) Magically, the picture appears. I'm sure there is an easier way. |

What is the link to the photo's page on image shack? If you post that here I might be able to help you out a bit. —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

No, I got it Brian. It's like you said--it was a matter of getting rid of all that "img" image shack bla bla and putting a simple code in front. See? Small victory for a non-techie like me. |

I was talking to you, but I'm glad you figured it out! If you don't mind, send me or post the link to that photo's imageshack page. I'll see if I can find an easier way for you. —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

O.K. hope this is what you mean. These are the links image shack provides for sharing images for different uses: http://img8.imageshack.us/content_round.php?page=done&l=img8/2705/wailonthebeach.jpg&via=mupload |

Hmmm. Ok, there is a list of different types of links to share your image under the photo. I suspect you want the one labeled "Direct Link" for use on the SG101 forum (it is unavailable to me since I'm not signed in). That one should be free of the <img> and [img] tags. —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea Last edited: Apr 12, 2011 07:54:45 |

That's it! I copied that link into the picture icon of the reply box, and boom. Thanks Brian . . . |

Thanks Brian. I would have never figured it out on my own. Totally different from most other forums. —Danny Ellison aka dubtrub |

Yes Danny we are bleeding edge here. Photobucket users: use the "direct link" here on SG101. E.g. Copy the direct link with control-c, come back here, type control-p, then control-v to paste in the direct link. —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

Nope, no html. Very weird, the format it puts it into. It recognizes HTML, but morphs it instead of displaying what is wanted... |

Let's walk through a real Photobucket example. Say you have a photo in Photobucket and this is the Photobucket page: http://s210.photobucket.com/albums/bb150/mikegeibel/?action=view¤t=049.jpg On that page do you see all the different link styles in the "Share this photo" box? You want the one that says "Direct link". Clicking on it will copy it to your clipboard. Just for reference, here is what that link looks like:
You then come back to SG101 and you can do 1 of 2 things. The first way is to click the little picture icon above the post edit box. This will prompt you for the URL to the photo. At this point I just type control-v to paste in the direct link. This overwrites the "http://" that is already in the prompt. Click OK, and then something like this will be added to your post:
A shortcut to clicking on the photo icon is to type control-p. This works in most browsers. The second way to add the photo is to just type:
You can click the green check mark to preview your post. You should end up with this: —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea Last edited: Apr 18, 2011 07:52:02 |

For Google Photos (Picasa) (as well as just about any website that shows you a photo), you can always just right click on the photo to get the direct URL. In Firefox, for example, right click and pick "Copy Image Location". Alternatively, if you want a different size:
Either way you can now paste the direct URL into the post. E.g. come back to SG101, click in the box to create / edit a post, type control-p (or click the picture icon), then type control-v to paste in the URL. Preview with the green check mark to see if you got it. Flickr instructions to follow shortly. —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea Last edited: May 23, 2011 07:59:12 |

For Flickr: Log into your account and find a photo you want to share. Above the photo you'll see a pull-down menu next to the Facebook and Twitter icons that has the tool-tip "More ways to share". Click on that. Select "Grab the HTML/BBCode". Pick the size you want and make sure the HTML radio button is mashed down. Now unfortunately, Flickr includes some junk you don't want in the copy/paste box. This is because, as per the Flickr rules, if you share the photo on another site, you are really only "allowed" to share a link to the page on Flickr. This is the primary reason I don't recommend Flickr to host photos you want to share on forums. But anyway, if you really want to do this, you can find the bit you need to fish out of the text box. Here is an example:
You want to copy out the URL that ends in .jpg, i.e. this part:
I suspect that may be too difficult for non-techie folks, so again, for that reason don't use Flickr if you want to embed images in forum posts. You can post a link to your album or photo though. Flickr also uses Javascript bullsh*t so you can't right click and grab the URL. You'll have to disable Javascript in your browser to get the URL. So again, I don't recommend using Flickr to embed photos in forum posts. It's great for posting links to galleries and slideshows though. —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea Last edited: May 24, 2011 08:10:15 |
