I wish I was reading better things about the Xaviere Jazzmaster XV-JT 40. Some Chinese made guitars are pretty good. I like my Eastwood Monolith and Classic Vibe 50's Squier Strat. I wish the Chinese would make a Mosrite copy of similar quality to the Classic Vibe.

I have some Strats & they work pretty good...I think the "ideal" sound is Carl Wilson's (& Tony Andreason's) Fender Jaguar....I got a hold of an Eastwood "Hi-Flyer" (w/a stop tail), & I put a Bigsby b5 vibrato on it using a "Vibramate"...(great, no holes)....This is GREAT for surf..it does sound very close to a Jaguar..& stays in tune Very Well. Also Very Good is the (seemingly underrated) G&L sc-2...WOW what a tone!!

I'm curious if anyone has any experience with the new Squier Vintage Modified Jazzmaster? I've never played one, seen one or even heard one.

I have played a couple of them a few times.
Like most Squiers it was hit or miss on the fret end finish one was smooth the other a little sharp and the Jaguar was like razors.
They played well and sound nice but... there is a tone difference from the Fender Jazzmaster I played with the same amp.
I would buy if it had a trem and didn't want to spend the money on a Fender Jazzy.

Its supposed to be a mix of a Firebird and Jazzmaster, a "Firemaster"!
There are more pics over at offsetguitars.com (in the library).
My next project will be a SGV but its difficult to find the parts.

Someone here (I forget who) wrote that Jazzmaster's are unfocused compared to Strats. Just exactly what does that mean? Does anyone rely exclusively on a Jazzmaster, or do most have a different type of guitar as either backup or to have access to other tonal possibilities? Thanks.

I feel Jazzmasters are unfocused as well. That is sort of why people use overdrive as well. "focused" is that tight smooth tone that makes melodies sound "angelic". Violin is probably a great example of this, just a great instrument for melodies and solos because it is instantly accessible.
Doesn't mean you can't make great music with a Jazzmaster, it just takes a little more doing to get that tone out of it, and most of it is in the hands anyways. I personally don't like strats when I play them, I hate them. Others can do well with them.
And most people, if they have a backup, have the same guitar. It is a true backup in that sense. People like to perfectly recreate the feeling and tone they are comfortable with live. If they take a different guitar, it is more just having a second guitar there that you might use on some songs because it fits the song.

It changes for me anyway as time passes and I get tired of hauling around too much gear...now days it's a Yamaha SG-2 with a '65 Jag for back up and a baritone...I'd like to bring along a hollowbody also but there ya go again!

Probably the "best" surfguitar could be a Jaguar.....my preference is a Stratocaster, maybe because they are so utilitarian, but ya' can play very convincing surf music on em' as well. Dick Dale must know something here. I also have 2 G&L SC-2's, and while they do "tele" real good....the 2 "MFD" pickups together (in middle pos) sound dynamite for surf lead or rhythm. I had Dick Dale autograph one of em' when I saw him & he knew all about em'. I said to him "This has more Fender Klunk than a Fender" & he agreed w/me.

My self refinished Korean-era Squier II Strat which has been painted Krylon Coral Isle Mist with GFS Surf 90's and high quality pots and three-way switch. This guitar can be seen elsewhere on this site under it's own thread, I'm having trouble uploading pics.
