Last week, out of the blue, my first girlfriend Sally tracked me down through a mutual friend. I hadn't seen or heard from her in 40 years...her mom wanted her to marry a doctor, so off she went to Vanderbilt and ended up marrying a nice med student who ended up being a chief surgeon in Texas. I always wondered what happened to her.
Sally sent me these scanned pictures that were taken at a party we played in 1966. The first one is us playing; the others were just fun shots of the girls mugging with our guitars. I had never seen these pictures before and was especially glad to get them as we didn't have a good picture of the drum kit with the band logo. The girl behind the kit is Sally, not Robert, our drummer.
Anyway, I thought I'd share these old pics. We had way better amps than guitars back then!

In the first pic, I'm hiding behind the girls. In the other one, I'm the goofy-looking one with glasses sitting on the floor.
That's Tone Boy in the white shirt sitting beside me.

Hey, Brian,
Nope...no recollection at all. We played a lot of gigs back then. I do remember that the month before (January '66) we played a show for the patients at the local VA mental hospital. I have a 8x10 glossy of us on stage at that gig hanging on the wall in the studio but unfortunately, no scanner.

Take a digital photo of it (the poor man's scanner).

OK, here goes...a picture of a picture:
Left to right: Tone Boy on rhythm guitar, Robert Miller (hidden) on drums, me on lead and Ed Pater on Bass.
I was playing my brand new '64 Olympic White Jaguar that was my early high school graduation present. My dad felt sorry for my bleeding fingers resulting from playing the Teisco that is in the earlier pics. Back then I had no clue how to set up a guitar aside from lowering the bridge all the way...which I did, but the strings were still at least 1/2" above the fretboard. That, coupled with the heavy strings we used back then (13's) resulted in a fairly painful experience. When dad got me the Jaguar, it was pretty much life-changing, from an ease of playing standpoint.
However, the Jaguar soon developed a weird finish issue so I sent it back to Fender for refinishing which is why I wasn't playing it in the pictures in the first post. I asked Fender to redo it in sunburst so the paint wouldn't turn pink again. Still have the Jag which is in near mint condition. I wish I had asked Fender to repaint it back in Olympic White, though.

Hey Jack, thanks for sharing and also telling your story about the '64 Jaguar. Viewing this thread is sort of looking into a time machine. Cool!

Tone Boy is referring to a "Show of Stars" talent contest that we won back in late 1965. Shades of The Wonders in the "That Thing You Do" movie. I haven't come across any pics of that show but there are probably some packed away in the attic...I wish I knew where!

I recently came across several old pix of a very early line-up of our earliest band "The Nightriders" (instrumental only). With help, I relocated this thread with so many of Woody's great early band pix and decided to post this one just for yucks.
Like Woody's group, The Mariners, we played a lot of gigs. Including getting kicked out of Callaway Gardens Park for "bad behavior." The Crossfires had nothing on us in that department.
This is from fall 1965 in my mom's basement. We are actually "recording" and you can find the mic somewhat obscured by the poor contrast in the lower right corner of the pix.
From left to right:
Bobby Ryles, Bass, Gibson EBO and Gibson Atlas bass amp
Eddie Katcher, "Lead" guitar, candy apple red '65 Stratocaster with Fender Super Reverb amp tilted back and almost completely out of sight behind the Atlas
Johnny Woodall, Rhythm guitar, '65 red Mustang with Silvertone Twin 12, (his grandmother's single 12 Silvertone on the chair behind him).
Total concentration.........
Sitting on the table behind us is a Karlsen speaker cabinet that we were using for playback. I still have that Karlsen. The recorder was a mono Wollensack. Off camera is Ronnie Kent our drummer at that time. At present I have a box full of old recordings on tape but no machine to play them back on.
The cool thing is that all four of us are still involved in music almost 50 years later.
Enjoy, it's ok to laugh.
