Permalink HiWatt Theremin?

New Topic

I've been eyeballing those Hiwatt mini-theremins. Anyone ever used one?

They seem to run for about $125 to $150... am I smarter just biting the bullet and saving up for a real deal at $375?

Any opinions would be greatly appreicated.

I carry them in my store. They're kind of hard to play but the built in echo is a cool effect to have for a theramin.

I used one on Formosa Rectangle if you want to hear one...

There is Surf east of Sepulveda.

Thanks Fripp!!

I downloaded the demo off of musician's friend as well, and it seems like there are a lot of oddball tones to be had.

Anyone else?

I have one. It's not as musical as a "real" theremin - ie, don't expect to be able to harmonize with "Good Vibrations" or anything. It's definitely more of a noisemaker in the latter-day MOAM sense, which in itself isn't a bad thing.

The Disasternauts

Phil Tiki from the Cocktail Preachers uses (or used) one, playing with his foot while playing the bass. I agree with Butch, it's cool but don't expect too much.
Good Vibrations by the way was a slide Theremin (Tannerin, Electro Theremin), so it's a little different than a real Theremin.
By $375 I guess you mean the Moog Etherewave which is an ok Theremin. Pretty stable and reliable, doesn't sound so great. I think it's a good buy, as I wouldn't reccomend a real expensive Theremin to anyone not planning to practice like a classic violin player. The TVox was around 1000 Euro last time I checked, it sounded good, but the fact that Lydia Kavina was playing it doesn't give a good comparison to the other Theremins I heard live.

The Scimitars

I got a kit from...http://www.theremaniacs.com/...about five years ago. Around $70, I think. Still works just fine.

Hey Hodad,
I just stumbled across them last night... they sell pre-made theremins as well for something like $120, which I think might be just right for me to jump on.
Chances are it will find it's way onto the new CD once we start recording...
