Some of the old Kustom Tuck & Roll SS stuff sounds great.
Noel's on the right track. Whatever you have, just play it. "Upgrade" when and if you can-or if you're so inclined, create you own sound.

I found a Rosac "Malibu 77G" head under "Surf guitar
amplifier" on Craigslist for $75.00. How could I
resist? I plugged it into an open-backed 1 X 12 Mesa
cab with an EVM-12L, and it sounded good until the
signal weakened and then crapped out completely. The
reverb was kinda "clangy", but the tremolo was very
nice. My tech will have it ready today or tomorrow-the
fix will be about $25.00 plus I had him change the cord
to a three-prong.
It's pretty small and very light. Supposed to be 70
watts. I plan to carry it as a backup. I'll let you
know how it sounds now when I get it back.

My tech Lou, called to say the Rosac is ready and it SMOKES (he knows tone). Here's a link to his facebook page:

Several of the amps shown are or were mine: Super Reverb (gone), Showman, Mesa Blue Angel, and Rosac (last pic) are still in the fold. If anyone in the San Diego/Orange County/Inland Empire area is looking for a great tech, send me a PM and I'll give you Lou's contact info. He's been doing work for me for 15 years. He can fix anything-amps, effects, PA's and his prices are VERY reasonable. The Rosac was $40.00 INCLUDING replacing the old, spliced, two-pronged plug with a computer cord receptical. He's even kept "Roland"; my mid-80's RC-1000 drum machine running. He was also a consultant on "Brain Seltzer" Dyno Brain pre amp.

I'm a big believer in early Silverface amps. Great tone, handwired for serviceability and much, much cheaper than their Blacface predecessors. In fact, in a lot of cases you can buy a vintage Silverface for much less than a used RI would run you, which is pretty crazy.

Keep an eye out on your local Craigslist for a Silverface Twin or Pro Reverb. So many players are going for lower-wattage combos these days, you can sometimes nab these for under 7 bills in great shape. Great for surf, excellent reverb and they'll hold value if you ever decide to move up to the Black and Brown Fenders.

The Rosac solid state "Malibu" head indeed SMOKES! It reminds me of an old solid state Standel I had (or and old Kustom). Pretty "warm" for a SS amp! Not as much volume as I expected. Through my Showman 15" tone-ring cab, it's not as loud as my Carvin X-60 112 combo with an EVM 12L. It does sound GOOD tough and will probably see duty as my bakcup.

Lab Series bass heads with a reverb tank can produce some cool clean surf tones.
I guess Lab Series amps were made and designed by Moog for Gibson in the 80s/90s. They're some phenomenal solid state amps.

Good enough for B. B. King!

I get very good tones out of the Crate Powerblock, and
it weighs only 5 lbs. Here's an old thread about it:

This caught my attention, and I vowed to check out the Powerblock. Low and behold, today I made a visit to one of my favorite pawnshops and struck paydirt! I picked up a like-new Powerblock including power cord and padded gig bag AND a Carvin AG-100D for $160.00! I already have an AG-100D I use for the drum machine in the duo, so now I have a backup. I got the Powerblock home and ran it through my 1 X 15 Showman tone-ring cab and WOW! Danny's right. Nice clean tone-even without reverb. It's so small and light, it might get some front-line duty.
Thanks for the heads-up!

Nothing beats the sound of a blackface Super Reverb. You can find them in good shape for around $1200 or so if you are patient. You can probably play if for 5 years and at least get back what you paid if you decide to sell. Not a bad deal.
