I currently have been utilizing a Boss Micro digi 4-track. It's not bad for what it is and the end result is decent.
Not very user friendly though and you are limited with just the 4 tracks.

I'm considering upgrading, any suggestions? Thinking about at least an 8 track. Don't want to break the bank either?

Macbook Pro running Pro Tools with a simple m-audio box as the interface.

Works beautifully, much better than any PC I've recorded on. With that said... I hate Apple.

Do y'all think a laptop comp / software is the way to go? Seems a lot of folk are using them now-a-days.

I would like something protable so I'm not tied to my desktop comp.

My laptop setup works perfectly. Yes, it bogs down a bit if I over do it on the number of tracks I am using. However, like any other method of recording, you learn tricks to get around such things.

As far as quality, I am completely satisfied. In fact, after the upcoming recording session for our EP, our plan for future recordings is to book studio time simply to do drums. After that, we are going to lay down all other instrument tracks at our leisure using my setup and then send the tracks out to be mixed in order to save on studio cost.

My setup is a pretty nice laptop, a tascam 4 channel usb interface with midi in/out. I also use a cheap keyboard as a midi controler. I do have lots of studio plugins as well that work for warming up tracks and adding room space.

Just a note: For the absolute most band for your buck, make sure you have the BBE Sonic Maximizer plugin for whatever DAW software you choose.

To get a laptop that I would be comfortable recording on, it would cost the same as a 13" Macbook Pro. I hate Apple... but it does recording audio extremely well. Also, the engineering on their laptops is first rate. So, I am much more comfortable being portable with it.

I've retooled my home studio. So now it's a Windows 7 64-bit pro machine w/ Sonar 8.5. Lotta stuff on the wishlist, like quality monitors and good mics.

Two Alesis ADAT LX20 digital tape recorders and a Mackie 24-8 analog board + some outboard gear (dbx compressors, Alesis Quadraverb, Wedge, etc.)

A lot of this stuff was pre-owned and wasn't all that expensive.

Depends what your priorities are really. I think they are quite different if you are planning to record on your own to recording in a band situation. I record with a full band so my priorities are ease of use and the ability to record multiple simultaneous tracks: many systems can only do two at once. I say ease of use because when you are standing there with a guitar in your hand and a roomful of people you don't want to be scrolling through multi-parameter menus. I use the Korg D888 for band recordings and like it a lot. Working on my own I always use Garageband on the Mac.
