Nice stuff you all got there...

jealoussurf (owner of a Squier strat...)

dp
what do you call that guitar?

Hey dp, I think that's an Ibanez Talman (maybe TC630) from the mid- to late-nineties, or something. I don't know when they stopped making these models.

Wow, how BEAUTIFUL is that!! An awesome JM, Krupanut. Congratulations! (I've been playing my JM almost exclusively for the last month-plus - I'm in a real JM state of mind!)

Who of us wouldn't want to see that under our Christmas tree??

hey mikeg:

what do you call that guitar? it looks pretty sweet! (not a bad musicman amp you got there, either!)

Ivan had it right, it's an Ibanez Talman. I think it's a TC630 or TC620, something like that anyway. Ibanez made these for a few years in the mid to late '90s, and this one is one of the earlier ones that were made in Japan before they started making them in Korea. It's pretty strat-like tonally, especially in the #2 & #4 positions (two pickups selected) The neck is really nice birdseye maple and it plays real smooth. It was a pretty significant purchase as up until I bought it I had only ever owned one electric guitar, my BC Rich Seagull Jr. that I bought in 1981. But I wanted to get something with a whammy bar and I had played a couple of Talmans down at the music store when they first came out and was impressed. There were two materials used for the bodies, the first ones were all "Resincast" material, and then wood bodies were introduced. I think the Resin bodies sound better, probably because the pickups were tailored for use in them.

And I LOVE my Musicman 65 amp, I used to have two of 'em but I sold one a few years back. The tolex on this one was all ripped up, the grille cloth was trashed, and the reverb didn't work when I bought it. I restored it myself using the proper tolex and grille cloth. In the course of fixing the reverb I did some experimentation using different springs, and mismatching transformers until I got a reverb sound I liked. It's a terrific amp for surf, it stays real clean and bright and has decent headroom.
I'd like to get a 130 head one of these days. Wink

early 50's Gretsch lap steel ($48), which i traded (for $300) and my 67 Kent Hollowbody to get my Epiphone Riviera. NOS December 2004 Gretsch 1957 RI 6128 duojet $910 on ebay. my 90's mexi Pbass & upgrades: 57 RI pu, bridge and pu covers, knobs, anodized gold guard. I the bass totalled $315.

A 2006 addition to the LBoP amp arsenal: the Rivera Clubster 25. This is basically an updated Fender Super Champ (dual 6V6, 25 W) with modern features such as FX loop and Line Out. At $899 and rarely discounted, this is a boutique amp that provides more bang for the buck than other boutique amps that cost more w/less power (i.e., Carr Mercury @ $2150 USD). The Rivera Clubster 25 records real nice. Smile

'65 blackface Bassman Head.

Happy Holidays!!! Very Happy

On Saturday, I just picked up a Silverface 2x15 Bassman Cabinet to
add to my list. It sounds killer with that '65 Bassman head. Twisted Evil

Does anybody know a good online resource for identifying speakers?
It has 2- 15" gold-framed "square-back" speakers that I'm curious
about. The buyer says they are original. I got it cheap enough that
I'm not worried whether they are original or not...

I was pretty fortunate this year, but this one really hit the mark.

Thanks Ivan, (oh keeper of killer gear.) Cool

Yeah I think a JM and a Strat are the perfect one two punch!

Boy I'd love to here you wail on your JM.

Has it been relatively easy for you to switch back and forth? Strat to JM?

The only trouble I have is the difference in hand position while muting the strings. It takes me a song to get my brain wrapped around it.

Same to you! I think your gear is sweet!

I totally agree! I think of it in the following way: when I need the big fat 'boochy' reverb sound (the Astronauts) or something a bit more ragged (Link), it's the JM; when I need something more focused and agressive (DD) or smoother and mellower (the Shads), it's the Strat. Between the two guitars, I have all the necessary bases covered!

Actually, I've had my JM for exactly ten years this month! I bought it after witnessing the Fathoms in action. But anyway, I've been using both my Strats and my JM quite a bit, so it seems perfectly normal to switch between them by now. BTW, you CAN hear me 'wail' on my JM, as I recorded quite a few Space Cossacks songs using my JM (Solaris Stomp, Black Sand, Gunmetal Express, Moroccan Adventures, Tsunami Tsurprise, The Defector, Fiesta Del Cossacapulco, and Mustang on the Link Wray Tribute).

The only trouble I have is the difference in hand position while muting the strings. It takes me a song to get my brain wrapped around it.

Yeah, I know what you mean. The arm does fall differently on the strings on two guitars. I've seen photos of myself with a JM, and I think I kinda hold it in a strange way, I guess maybe to put my arm in the Strat-like position, which I'm more used to. But it's not a biggie....

Anyway, enjoy your awesome gear!

some stats.

judging by this thread, in 2006 we collectivly bought at least

  • 18 Fender guitars of which 11 offsets, of which 3 fiesta red

  • 8 reverb tanks

  • 10 assorted Fender tube amps

  • 7 Weber Cali's

  • 3 powerblocks

that's disappointing, c'mon people, it's gotta be more then that, keep posting! Wink

Wannes, it's the #1 purchase, not all our purchases. But, since you asked:

'66 Dual Showman
'64 Reverb Unit
AVRI Jazzmaster sunburst
Weber Cali 15 ceramic
Custom A/B switch
Dunlop purple gel picks
Crate Powerblock
Toyota Rav4 -my open bed pickup truck didn't cut it for bad weather and security.

I'd like to think I'm done gearing up, but who knows what will inspire me in 2007?

Somewhat related advice: Everyone should be keeping a record of their equipment's model and serial numbers, digital pictures are even better. And uploading it to a secure storage area on the net. You never know what can happen, fire, theft, flood, etc...

Sheer heaven.

There was an article in todays Denver Post newspaper about bands whos gear has gotten stolen. It talked about how bands have been ruined, and tours canceled etc. The one common link is that non of these bands had any kind of insurance, or even written record of what they had. Very few ever get it back. I know I've never kept an exact list (ser.#s, etc) of gear that I have.

"You can't tell where you're going if you don't know where you've been"

I bought a 'Hartke' tee-shirt I forgot to mention.

Like the others said these are just the top purchases. If you want to keep track of it all, or at least the stuff I still have, add 2 USA strats(a Daphne Blue 96 with a rosewood board and a Lake Placid Blue '01 with a maple board), a stock 1970 Princeton Reverb, a Carvin 2x12, a Crate Power Block, A Sovtek Mig 50, a mim 50's RI Tele with a Bigsby, a mim 69 RI Tele, a Galveston clear acrylic guitar and this

A pristine 1982-ish Electra x-145 on eBay.
It's got a body that looks like a cross between a Strat and a Gibson SG (pointy bouts). 3 single-coil pickups, 5-position switch plus a micro switch that enables neck/bridge combo as well as all 3 pickups.
Metalflake blue (glows on stage!).
My first whammy guitar in way too long.
I've had a non-whammy example of this model since 1980 - a real workhorse.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.
