Permalink Digiverb Vs. Hardwire RV-7

New Topic

I've demo'd the RV-7. Not the Digiverb. The Digiverb sounds a little darker? I've read rumor that the RV is the same as the DV and others say they are not.

Has anyone here owned both or have demo'd both and could comment about the differences?

I've owned 2 Digiverbs. I think they are amongst the best digital pedal reverbs available, especially for surf tones. However, they, like alot of digital reverbs, suffer from a lack of headroom. I've heard the RV-7 doesn't have this issue, but I've also read the RV-7 is NOT the same as the Digiverb... different algorithims. Different sound. I've not played an RV-7, but every demo I've seen it sounds bright, sterile, clinical.

I recently picked up a T-Rex Tonebug reverb, and I'm liking it quite alot... but it also has the lack of headroom issue... perhaps this is just a by-product of digital reverb? I don't know, but ALOT of the reverb pedals (and some digital delays as well) suffer from this problem. Anyway, I like the Tonebug, but since it has the problem, I've been thinking about buying the Digiverb for a THIRD time, and just living with the headroom problem.

I've played probably a dozen reverb pedals, and the 3 best were the Digiverb, Tonebug, and WET. With an honorable mention going to the Verbzilla, but the Line6 buffer makes everything a little brighter, and I hate that.

I've never played through a Digiverb, but I've got the RV-7 and it is NOT in the least bit sterile and/or clinical.
It CAN be bright, but only if you dial it up that way.

What I love about the RV-7 is that I can crank it up to extreme settings - like a real splashy Spring Reverb sound - and it doesn't get that nasty, metallic ringing that so many digital reverbs or delays get when you push the settings.
I've got an old Boss RV-3 that exhibits this big time (although it can sound quite good with more moderate settings).

And the range of sounds is outstanding on the RV-7. They use Lexicon reverb algorithms and I've used several modes now with great results.
So far, my favorites are the Spring, Large Hall, and Modulated Reverb.

As always, YMMV, but I highly recommend the Hardwire RV-7.
At the very least, it's worth an audition.

There are no wrong notes, just some questionable choices.

Now THIS is the 1st thing I've heard that has me REALLY interested in the RV-7. I think when I say "low headroom", we are talking about the same thing... that metallic splash that sounds like your overloading the pedal when you push the settings.

Have you ever played the Boss RV-5?

Great replies, exactly the info I want to hear! Funny, I was also looking at the Tonebug and the Wet.

I just picked up a Boss FRV-1 for the spring stuff. I have a RV-2 and love it but I'm hesitant to bring it out to shows due to its age and it's a little noisy for recording.

I wouldn't mind condensing it down to one pedal for the spring and the long halls/plates but I'm cool with two separate if they do their jobs exceedingly well.

Yeah, "low headroom" is probably just another term for it.

I have not tried the Boss RV-5, mostly because of my experience with my RV-3. The RV-3 is great with moderate settings, especially when mixing both delay and reverb (which is why I keep it around). But anything beyond that and I hear that cold, metallic clank. I didn't want another pedal with that same limitation so I looked at other brands.
I wanted a reverb pedal with more range and the Hardwire delivered.

I know what you're talking about. I've got a RV-2 on the board right now and the room and halls are clank free. I tested an RV-7 after I bought the RV-2 but I preferred the natural sound of the RV-2's halls over it. The 7 sounds more crisp digital and less natural by comparison. I was hoping the Digiverb was a little darker, more natural than the RV-7?

I've been checking out demos of the EH Cathedral and I have to say I'm really impressed with several settings, the plate sounds gorgeous. And the endless reverb stomp switch is what I had hoped the Freeze to be. The price is a little excessive for my pocket book though... Sad

On a lighter note that Boss FRV-1 so far is perfect for the spring stuff and it's size (I used to own an original 6G15, damn I wish I hadn't sold that one). Loving the FRV-1! Kiss

Maybe consider the Wet reverb? It doesn't have the different reverb types, but does what it does do well. Its pricey though.

I had a Cathedral, had high hopes, was totally dissapointed. Heard digital artifacts all over the place.

I had a WET. GREAT reverb, one of the best. No "clank". Just great. HOWEVER- it's not a spring simulation, and while it does a really cool Sun Records bathtub echo/reverb thing, I don't remember it surfing to well (since this is Surf101 here.)

It also adds a touch of brightness, which I didn't like. It's the buffer. Others have noticed it too. If it weren't for that touch of brightness, or if he ever makes one with a tone knob, I'll definitely re-buy; it was great.

^ I think I'll just keep with the RV-2 and the FRV-1 for spring, room, and halls. I've not heard a demo that made me want to ditch the RV-2's room/halls yet (epic), and the FRV-1 is beautiful for spring reverb simulation.

Thanks for all the help guys, I think I'll keep looking around.
