hey everyone. do any of you know what scales surf guitarists favor?
i know dick dale does a lot of that hungarian...eastern european and middle easternish sounding stuff, but thats easy to figure out.
what do others use? just basic major scale stuff?
also!
do any of you know what scales hawaiian guitarists use? and i dont mean slack key and any of those wahine tunings. i mean just regular tuning scales.
if any of you know that would be cool! thanks!

For trad surf you covered it; DD style eastern scale, or straight ahead major/minor/pentatonic. Once you go beyond that you start heading into more progressive styles of surf ala Mermen or Pollo etc... which requires a deft touch to successfully pull off.

Ive used a minor 6th chord and push wammy before stroking and then let the wammy come up in our song "Makaha Paddle Steal". it's on our myspace, see sig. that's about as hawaiian sounding as I can get - which is not a lot admittedly.
more "cheap and easy get the effect" scales:
- "DD" (A Bb C# D E F G# A) and harmonic minor (A B C D E F G# A) for gypsy/eastern sounding
- minor with #4 (!) and #6(so a whole 6 that is) for Indian sound (use drone) (A B C D# E F# G A) (Im pretty sure phantom frank riffs in this a lot)
- minor raised 6 no 3th for Irish sound (A B D E F# G A)
last two actually sound better in D.... rhythm's everything too.
