From Stephen J. Mc Parland's super cool book "It's Party Time"...
I have that book as well but haven't really read it yet. I was recently thinking about either starting that one or his Bikinis, Black Denim & Bitchen Sounds after hearing about the recent Hey, Beach Girls! comp on Ace Records.

Contains lots of great tracks although I won't be getting it myself since I simply already have almost everything on it.
Cool, gonna pic that up! Great shot of the Honey's on the cover!

Here's an album of scans from "Sound Of The Surf's" Facebook page. This barely scratches the surface. Adding more every week.

Very cool. Love that shot of The Blazers! The Pyramids shots were quite funny and um, a bit strange. Looks like those guys went out of their way to put on a wild show. Love this appearance by The Pyramids in BIKINI BEACH....

It's too bad their isn't more footage like this from the early sixties. The vintage clips in the trailer for "The Surf Of Surf" look amazing. I hope there's lots more! Can't wait to see it! Thanks TD

I'm sure you're gonna dig it! Includes one of my all-time favorite girl group songs, The Westwoods' "I Miss My Surfer Boy Too" which features Jack Nitzsche's wife Gracia on lead vocals.
The Ace comp also has a very interesting track of Dee Dee Sharp singing "opera" over the exact same backing track (here called "Riding The Waves") that was used for The Woofers' great "Ridin' The Rails" (couldn't find a clip of that one on the net but below is a pic of their album).
We also recorded it with the Daytonas for our Quarter Mile album.

Yeah, I noticed that too...
And speaking of the Challengers and their Go Sidewalk Surfing! album, here's the opening track "Pipeline" taken from a TV show shot at Waikiki Beach. When I listened to the album yesterday, I was thinking it must be Hal "Constant Drum Rolls" Blaine and not Richard Delvy on the drums. Not really surprising if that was the case since Blaine did play on more than a few Challengers recordings.

Without trying to steal merit from the sadly late Richard Delvy, I think that Hal Blaine played drums in nearly all the Challengers´ recordings since K-39.
But, returning to the main topic, what a bunch of GREAT PICTURES! Love these Challenger´s Ivy League blazers.

You can tell the tracks Hal plays on because he tends to roll through the whole song like K-39 and their version of Pipeline like Klas mentioned. Hal is the king! But Delvy did play drums on many of their tracks and they played live constantly with him drumming, including backing up top touring acts like Chuck Berry and so on. Session guys were very common in those days.
Glad so many of you are diggin' this thread!

Love that Woofers tune. Have that LP in my collection. And your band The Daytonas version is awesome too. In fact, I listen to the Quarter Miile album constantly!

Ah. Sorry. Think that is because Sound of the Surf is a public page & Tim's page is a personal page.

Cool! I wondered which one did that. It is so recognizable.

"Hal Blaine Strikes Again"
Hal Blaine Strikes Again is a famous rubber stamp used by Blaine to stamp scores that he plays and also places where he played. Drummer and author Max Weinberg, in his introduction to the chapter on Blaine in his book writes:
Eleven years later our band played Wembley Arena, near London. After the show, while we were relaxing backstage, Bruce asked me to come into his dressing room. I went in, he pointed to the wall and said, "Look at that." I looked at the wall but didn't see anything except peeling wallpaper. "Look closer," he said. Finally, I got right down on the spot he was pointing to. and right there, in a crack in the paper, rubber stamped to the wall, it said HAL BLAINE STRIKES AGAIN.
When asked to explain about the stamp Blaine replied, "I always stamp my charts. And there's a reason why I started that; it wasn't all ego." He went on to describe that occasionally he would need to find a particular chart amidst "five hundred pieces of music in a pile" and he needed some mark to do so. "Eventually I had a rubber stamp made up, and from that day on I've always stamped every piece of music I play, whether it's a demo or something I play at a friend's house."
Another drummer, Mike Botts, then with the band Bread, recalls: Every studio I went to in the late sixties, there was a rubber stamp imprint on the wall of the drum booth that said, Hal Blaine strikes again. Hal was getting so many studio dates he actually had a rubber stamp made. He was everywhere!
Anyone got a picture of one of the stampings? That would make a great album title and cover.

I enjoyed reading "Hal Blaine and the Wrecking Crew: The Story of the Worlds Most Recorded Musician" back in the early 90's. It was well-written with attention to detail. Many of the anecdotes involved Tommy Tedesco-the worlds most recorded guitarist and one of the funniest human beings I've ever encountered. I wish Tommy had written a similar book before he died and hope his son Denny can overcome the problems preventing the general release of his documentary "The Wrecking Crew".

I have heard, the rumor is, that Hal played the drums on this tasty little Beatles tune from Abbey Road. Listening to the finesse, I can easily believe it.
Here is the isolated drum track.

I have been drooling over all the tracks on this guys site. Enjoy!

Here's Hal and Mel Taylor rockin' out. We all know that Mel sat in for Hal on "The Lonely Bull", but many Ventures tracks you may have assumed were Mel were actually Hal.

They should do a documentary on that guy...
Or a movie for general release. Dusty Watson could play him! He's a big part of Denny Tedescos documentary!

Indeed! The Ventures have session guys on many recordings. Even guitar.
Hal also played drums on Dick Dale's stuff on Capitol, which leads me to my next post...

Entry Eight... Surf Session Aces! These session cats played on more surf/hot rod tunes than you can shake a stick at
. The Superstocks, The Marketts, The Hondells, The Four Speeds, The Ghouls, Richie Allen and The Pacific Surfers, The Challengers, The Stingers, The Beach Boys, The Ventures
the full list can go for pages.
Pictured here are Hal Blaine, Steve Douglas, Richie Podolor. Gary Usher, Jerry Cole, and Glen Campbell. There are more like Tommy Tedesco, Billy Strange, Plas Johnson, Carol Kaye, but these guys are likely the most recorded surf/hot rod musicians of all time! Here's to the session cats!

Yeah, the session guys definitely played an important role during those years.
