Well winter time has come to Denver... so I thinking of taking some Guitar lessons.
Right now I can play most of the stuff on that is tabbed here but when it comes to playing by theory or ear I'm at a loss.
So I was wondering if this "CAGED" system I read about would be useful for playing in the Surf style.

It's all useful for 'Surf Style Music'.
Surf music is just like any other music, as far as the playing goes.
As for different methods, Learn it all! Caged is just another name for boxed method which is just another name for playing in keys and so on... it's just a name for an idea someone wanted to promote.
Imho It all is needed at some time. Whether it be surf, country, jazz, or punk or what have you...
Learning to play as many styles as you can will unleash the guitar player in you.

It's a pentatonic scale, and is mondo useful in surf!

As Joelman said it's nothing new. But it can be useful. It teaches you the fingerboard by using the cowboy chords, but Barring them with the first finger and using them all over the neck. Open C shape, Open A shape, G, E, and D. Get it? CAGED 
The way I look at theory is you have to have something that clicks for you to really understand what's going on. For some it's the Fingerboard Logic stuff, for others it's going to be a more classic music training approach. You just don't know what will eventually work for you, so I always advocate for folks who ask me to keep buying books until you DO find the one that lets you get it. Because you will when you find the right approach, and when you do, all those books you didn't get before, will make sense to you. And they won't have been a waste in the long run. Just keep trying.

The caged system is great for learning were all the notes are on the fingerboard, I'm working with it. I'm trained in classical and jazz piano so "knowing where everythings at" is very useful to me. I draw the line at barring C and G chord forms however, that hurts!

Depends on the guitar! On my Parker Fly? Piece of cake. On my 50's style esquire neck? Good luck!

bamboozer, it won't be hard for you, then. I've got the same sort of training, and while I have very poor guitar technique, I really don't have any problems finding notes. Knowing which notes to find is more my problem. All those years playing from itty bitty dots hasn't helped my ears any.

One should always strive to pick the right notes first and the best notes second...however; discovering the perfect notes is really more like a gift from heaven, one must be willing to accept the perfect notes when they present themselves, regardless if they are right or best. And so it is, and so it will be.
