Greetings all! Long time lurker, first time poster. I have got two questions for you. I am not having much luck capturing the reverb on my recordings. I am using an SM-57 with a Fender Silverface. I have adjusted the angle of the mic, the distance of the mic, and have also tried using two mics. The recorded sound is either hollow or is missing a lot of the reverb. I would like to be able to purchase a reverb unit but am not able to yet. Also, do you know of any decent plugins that would get the "surf" reverb sound? I use Adobe Audition to record with. Thanks all.

Katz, from all my research on the net and this group in particular, I'd say you're just plain out of luck until you cobble the cash to get an outboard. Used reissues can be had for around 3 C's.

You might want to try a little compression. As the 'verb trails off, the comp will increase it's volume in attempt to keep the level even. You have to be real careful about how much you add, because too much will kill the attack of your tone.

i like some of the Sonitus plug-in effects. the reverbs sound pretty decent, but they don't provide the "sproing-and-splash" of the Fender Tank...nonetheless, they sound better than no reverberation at all.

Howdy Katz,
There's nothing like a reverb tank but the best plugin by far for this has to be Altaverb, the reverbs I've heard are really good. However reverb tanks are funky beasts. They splash around from their environment, for example live the tank will spat around from the stage volume. On The new Aquamarines CD we are mainly using a stock Fender Deluxe and it's a factory reverb. If you use a room mic it should be 3 feet or 6 feet etc from the SM57 to avoid phase cancellation but room acoustics come into play as well. I've been screwing around with a lot of combinations here's my latest experiment. I use a 412 and SM57 taped together with diaphragms lined up, this right on the grill just off the dust cone, these 2 mics feed a Presonus ADL 600 mic pre, there is also an AT4050 3 feet off the rear cab to a P-Solo mic pre. The guitar feeds an A/B box, one signal to a Fender Deluxe, the other to a Fender Cyber Twin which I record the SPDIF out. At mix time I use Amplitube2 on the SPDIF signal and mix that with the mics.

Have to agree that there is no sub for the outboard unit for surf...you can have a tech modify a tube amp adding "dwell" to your rig that would help a lot..the Holy Grail pedal is my favorite but again you're better off saving your $ until you can aford the real deal.

You can always plug a reverb spring directly into the effects loop of a mixer, line level works for a drippy sound. I always kept the springs when gear was beyond repair and you see them on eBay often.
