I have a nice turntable I bought in the early 80s and an old preamp that has a turntable input. From Radio Shack, I got a Y cable with L/R RCA plugs on 1 end for the preamp and a 1/4 inch plug on the other end which goes to the "in" on the back of my pc. Finally, I use audacity.com's free software. Audacity captures the sound from the pc "in" to a wav or mp3 file. If you don't have a component with a turntable input, you can buy a phono preamp for $50. Like for example the Astronauts doing a cool version of "Baby Please Don't Go" (I don't think this scene has ever been on YouTube).
