God, I truly hope this is not the case. The dude is what in his 60's, and gained fame and wealth. If he can't get over getting ripped off as a teenager, he has extreme mental issues. I would just find it hard to believe he would erase a chapter of his life because a slime-ball in the music industry. My guess is that he thinks his fans wouldn't relate to that type of music and doesn't want his name associated with something so different then what he is trying to sell now. What I really wonder is if when he is chilling at home, if he whips out the ol' strat and reverb tank and starts cranking out some of his old Jester tunes. |

Messina was, what, 15 at the time? It's possible that he just plain doesn't like the music he created when he was in high school. There's an interview where he was very adamant about not being happy with having the hot rod samples slapped all over The Dragsters, and IIRC that wasn't what he wanted to call the album, either. The two self-titled LPs were released later - I don't know if those were authorized releases or not. And Messina was so far into peaceful easy feeling mode by the time those came out that the music he was involved in was pretty much the complete and total opposite of what he'd done as a teenager. Personally I think The Jesters' stuff is a million times better than anything he would go on to do. Then again, this is probably the one and only place on the internet where someone would feel that way. That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it. |

Warren is indeed a man of reason. Considering Messina was involved with three highly successful bands, Buffalo Springfield, Poco, and Loggins & Messina, he probably just regards The Jesters as his High School band. Nevertheless, it would be cool if this site would at least contain something about his early years. More Messina & The Jesters trivia for you... Norm, it was not Glenn Frey - it was the son of the label's owner, and he had no hand in writing the songs, but his credit was added without consulting with Messina. This is according to Messina himself. The interview with Messina where he talks about his surf music past was in the Vintage Guitar magazine, and you can actually see all the parts about Messina's surf music history quoted by me in these two SG101 threads: http://surfguitar101.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=313 Messina's become well-known for very different kind of music, so I bet he thinks nobody cares or even knows about his surf stuff. I stand corrected. I got my info from John Blair's ILLUSTRATED DISCOGRAPHY OF HOT ROD MUSIC 1961-1965. Someone should inform John! He did say he was going to update his book!

It would probably be easy enough to ask him. He must be used to being asked questions by now, even possibly awkward ones. It's certainly a fair question. Considering the demigod status of Messina in surf circles, it's probably a good one, too. It's actually a little hard to believe he's not aware of this. Johny Barbata went on to considerable later success and doesn't have any hesitation about mentioning the Sentinals or, apparently, any really bad memories of them. Perhaps some amazement that he survived them. He doesn't have much to say about them, but he doesn't leave them out of his autobiography. If somebody leaves something out, there's probably a reason. It's perfectly fair to ask about that reason. Maybe not very tactful. You just can't insist on an answer. |
