Denver's cocktail lounge music combo. Unfortunately somewhat inactive now that GoGo Wise is off discovering the lounges of Minnesota. Not that Asnicar and Phelan aren't pretty busy most of the time, too. I am hoping there will be video from a reunion (annual?) during the Denver Underground Music Showcase. The band is Tony "Nascar" Asnicar (guitar, bass) (behind the monitor as usual), Megan Wise (vibes and drums), Susan Phelan (bass, guitar, vocals if any).
Latin'ia
Caravan
Walk, Don't Run
Watermelon Man
Jorge's Basement (a diferent Whorehay)
I was reminded of VoV this evening and felt I had to post these in penance for once posting a digital cam version of them doing Walk Don't Run.

They seemed to have a great sound.
To bad they weren't getting respect from the crowd.
Sounds like they were almost as loud as the crowd.
I would listen to them for sure.

Great new one Megan Wise just put up when I asked her about video from the Denver Underground Music Showcase. I just had a pocket camera along, because Megan's mom and step-mom do this sort of thing better than most and I like to stay out of the way when the mamarazzi are covering something!

All really nice! Particularly a fan of Latin'ia - possibly my favorite surf tune ever. Thanks for posting!

I noticed the crowd noise, too. You know, I bet it was a built in omnidirectional mic or a very wide angle one. Normally even a quiet band drowns out all conversation in there, but an omnidirectional would probably pick up and magnify anything at all near the camera. There is a huge bar just to the right of the view. Any experts here who know about these things?
Note: I just realized from the new Silver Hearse post that the whole Skylark set was shot when VoV opened for the Hollyfelds on Halloween. A pretty decent band if you like vocals .... Anyway, the place was packed with inebriated, costumed alternative country fans. See the crowd sweep. So maybe they were a little less attentive than was strictly right. And that is definitely not a directional mic.
OB, as far as Latin'ia, I know what you mean. One of the defining surf songs. I love it, but so few bands play it today. To me any band that plays it is an honorary surf band for the duration of the song. It is such a flexible song. You can suit it to almost any mood. Compare the Bambi Molesters' "the world is going to hell in a handbasket and I feel so bad" version with the "the sun is nice and I see a cantina in easy walking distance" one by Jim Waller & the Deltas. This is the "I believe I will have another martini before I go" version.

More Vibes on Velvet noticed this this morning.
From the same Halloween show last year, including Walk Don't Run.

Thanks for those Tuck.
It was a sad day for the Denver music scene when GoGo left town.
I sure do miss VoV...

Me, too. Did you catch the reunion at the Denver UMS this summer? They also played on a Monday night at the 3 Kings to an audience made up mostly of the burlesque troop going on next. Monday night, but kind of sad. I don't think the word got out well.
I believe those videos are Megan's mother's work.

The good news is that it seems likely Vibes on Velvet will be back in action later this year. They got together recently when GoGo visited Denver. Unfortunately the only video generated so far has been mine and I was so taken with their vocal of the Dead Boys' Sonic Reducer that I haven't gotten to any of the instrumentals yet!

thanks for the post Tuck,
this will be a good way to get acquainted with their music
before they play tiki oasis.
And I am sure Jonpaul and Rikki can
use these to help in learning the songs.
