Just want to pop in here for a moment. Glad many of you are enjoying this thread. Its cool that its stayed relatively Civil considering this is a hot-button topic for a forum like this. The opinions have varied widely of course. Does it matter in the real word? Well, as Warren put it so eloquently in another post
not so much. But the debate is very interesting.
I still feel the sound, aesthetic, and energy of Surf Music are permanently linked to the 60s no matter what. That means different things to different people of course. Its girls, cars, surfboards and guitars to some, and chord arrangements, string gauges, and the proper tank settings to others. What did the teens that originally played it and danced to think? Wish I could hear more of their stories.

Check out the promo on the main page for the Sound of Surf DVD. Look at all that cool footage from the 60s. Is any of that happening at a Surf show near you? The answer that pops in your head will let you know whether you are staying true to the spirit of surf music or not
or if you even care.

Norm,
I have to pop in with this thought to add to yours. As many of the surfers from Mickey Dora to other beach bums of lesser note that I have met, the overlying message is that surf music and marketing of surf culture was "kid stuff". After the earliest years at the Rendezvous and other spots, I tend to think of it appealing to younger pre-teens in CA and across the country building Weird-Oh models and fantasizing about the dream presented by the music and the marketing than the older surfers and ho-dads that could actually drive and get girls. Mostly, they talk about being fans of older r&b, the newer Soul music and beatnik jazz over that silly surf music. It's still a youthful spirit, but a little different than what you are saying. Thoughts?

You are correct, Ted. I have read Miki Dora's book, and Greg Noll's book. These guys started surfing in the 50's and thought the craze was all "kids stuff" and an exploitation of thier lifestyle. Did "Real" surfers from that time listen to surf music. From what I've read... um, not so much.

I think we have talked about this before, but it was amazing how many "leftovers" made it into our subconscious and conscious minds as little kids in the early '70s. Even after the whole "love generation" hippie thing was dominantly marketed, the backs of comic books, stickers in gumball machines, and the models that were still being produced gave us all a glimpse of the not quite dead surf and hot rod culture.
No, I never met Dora. I meant I have met other old surfers that I chatted up. Not famous at all.

But to balance it out with Ivan's point of view, The Super Stocks and Hondells were "old men" compared to say, The Original Sufaris or the Pastel Six.
And as everything "clicked" for me when I was older and wanted to play surf music, I loved the youthful spirit, but was also appreciative of the more sophisticated side of bands like The Atlantics and modern bands like the Space Cossacks, while I also gained more appreciation for the later 60s and 70s Beach Boys material, instead of being forever locked in to the early teeny bopper stuff.

No one said that. Just trying to be "fair and balanced".
But he did bring up the older players Ventures, etc and that he wasn't as into the I-IV-V thing as much as stuff that reached beyond that, compositionally. Is that a word?

I know I don't need to point this out to you Ted, but for the "younger folk" here (are there any??) The Superstocks and The Hondells were "studio" groups" and not real bands, yet I love that stuff to death! Most of it is in I-IV-V strangely enough!! And as far as the Beach Boys... man I love that stuff too. I've even grown to love their later non surf/hot rod stuff as well.

There are a few of us at the moment. Sometimes more, occasionally less. People seem to be gung-ho about surf for a little while and then ditch it for greener pastures. (See also: Foster, Evan)
edit: As for the later Beach Boys stuff, I like it but I tend not to get along with people who love their late 60s & 70s stuff but don't like the early albums.
