We have 56 photos now, and some of the last ones I got are real killer. Thanks and keep them coming. I can't wait until TikiTena's last one is picked. I might have to force that photo to get picked real soon now. BTW, it is possible for me to "program" POTD's for certain special dates, like Halloween (thanks Joe), Christmas, etc. So if you have a photo that would fit for a special day, let me know too. —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

I was thinking in a box above your welcome box, but below the main logo area. Think of it like a newspaper, the mainlogo is the mast head, and below it is the POTD, and maybe the "Check out our Forums" box is to the right of the photo. Buy Speed of Dark @ Bandcamp |

You mean on the right, above the "User Info" block? —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

I 2nd the motion, I think it's a good idea. I suggest you drop the main menu, welcome to sg101 frame and user info down. In it's place, post the POTD on 2/3rds and and put the 'check out our forums' on the right 1/3rd. —Danny Snyder Playing keys and guitar with Combo Tezeta Formerly a guitarist in The TomorrowMen and Meshugga Beach Party Latest surf project - Now That's What I Call SURF |

...of the day? Can you use the same one that's in the POTD section on the left hand side? —Danny Snyder Playing keys and guitar with Combo Tezeta Formerly a guitarist in The TomorrowMen and Meshugga Beach Party Latest surf project - Now That's What I Call SURF |

Ah, where's the ever-handy "cocktail napkin and ballpoint pen" that has solved so many of these layout issues through the years? I'm a Lit. person and I am still turned around a little. Of course, when you write on a cocktail napkin with a pen, you have to remember the difference between the mark for feet and the mark for inches, or else you wind up with a Stone Henge monument that was in danger of being trampled by dwarves. ~B~ |

The Photo of the Day thing doesn't feel so random. I'm sure there are a lot I haven't seen. |

And that, mi amigo, is the beauty of random numbers. Almost never the best way to conduct a systematic search. |

Two things: 1) One possible approach would be to tick off each photo as it was randomly selected, and not allow it again until all have been selected. Shuffling, or random ordering of all, so to speak, instead of random picking from the full set. There must be some clever alternatives to this, too. For example, randomly select x percent of the sample, shuffle it, run through that sequence and repeat. On the other hand, surprise may be the goal. Familiarity breeds contempt, lack of spontaneity breeds braindeath, and so on. 2) I wonder, is there a way to search the POTD database, or at least the comments thereto? BoulderBob says he explained the finish on his Jazzmaster, but at about 11:30 PM, so that it may be a long time before it comes up again, and, who knows, I might be doing something useful that day and miss it! |

We, okay, I, changed the POTD scheme a looong time ago. The details are in another thread. It acts like an iPod shuffle. The deck is shuffled randomly, and a sequence is generated. We then start walking through the sequence, day by day. When we get to the end of the sequence, it is shuffled again and we repeat. If someone gives me a new POTD it gets inserted into the sequence for the next day. (It also depends on how busy/lazy I am to get a new POTD inserted). Hope that helps. I dunno about a search feature. Would anyone use it? —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

I wouldn't use a search feature. You would have to go through and tag all the photos which would be quite the task. I don't the pictures of the day should be used as an image gallery. People have flickr, photobucket, or picasa for that if they want. |
